    MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL…

Who is this girl staring right back at me? I asked the mirror; I had a disappointed yet curious look on my face. I had made a promise to myself to bite back my tongue today. So as I confidently stepped out of the house, into my car, I placed my flask of tea beside me in the holder, closed the car door; as part of my ritual, I turned on the car radio an searched for ‘it’s a beautiful day’ track by Jamie Grace and moved my car. Indeed it was; the sun was up and I had already planned my day. I wasn’t going to get angry at any road user, I wasn’t going to get impatient at work, I wasn’t going to get suspicious… hey! Look at this silly driver… the words went out of my mouth as I stared angrily at the careless truck driver who had just crossed me without showing any traffic indicators. Suddenly I remembered my resolution for the day; I bit my tongue more angry at myself than the truck driver.

By 12noon in the afternoon, I had not still received the proposal from my team, I was cross and it didn’t help that I was the last to know about a scheduled meeting; I simply couldn’t help it but to lash out and put my victims in their right places. After all, it was righteous anger? Was it?

So, here I was standing in front of my mirror in the evening and staring at myself despondently. I am so disappointed in you Pearl I said to myself. Meanwhile, my image stared right back at me.

and so am I I thought I heard a faint gentle voice in my heart.

you are? I responded with a slight frown on my face. I dared to assume it was the Holy Spirit. My heart sunk…but just then the voice continued. you are disappointed because you put confidence in yourself the inner voice continued.

I began to think about as I shot one look at the girl in the mirror; a scripture came to mind and I went for my bible:

put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, … His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth…

    Psalm 146:3-4 (KJV)

Indeed his thoughts will perish, I muttered to myself as I went back to stand in front of the mirror. I cannot trust myself, see how I messed up during the day? How much more trusting someone else not to mess up. Paul emphasizes this in the book of Romans where he laments the weakness of the flesh which is unable to do the good things that is expected of it.

For I know that in me …dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me…

    Romans 7:18

It is really important to understand what makes a human being from the bible point of view. This will help in appreciating the concept of salvation and the reason why you need to accept the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. This will also help you in understanding the message of this book.

There are three components of Man (both male and female): man is a spirit, has a soul and lives in a body. When one accepts Jesus Christ as his or her Lord and Savior and repents from his sins and ask Jesus to come take over his life, the spirit of that person becomes alive, new, reborn! Note that the body most often remains the same. The soul comprises the mind, mindset, emotions which is renewed with the daily studying of the Word of God. This is illustrated simply below:

    image001.jpg

Figure 1.1 Man as a tripartite being

And I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless

    1Thess 5:23 (KJV).

Note the scripture above and the emphasis on each part, being in good condition.

What does it mean to be a spirit? Take a look at John 3:8 where Jesus describes the Spirit by comparing it to the wind; it blows, we hear the sound, we feel it but cannot see it. Thus the natural eyes cannot see spirit things
