MY STORY
LEARNING A NEW LANGUAGE IN A FOREIGN LAND
I was born in León Guanajuato, Mexico. I am the oldest of six and we grew up in a strict environment. My father always made sure that we had good grades in school and that we always behaved properly because my dad wanted us to be successful in life. My mom always took care of us with the unconditional love of a mother - comprehensive, sweet and always covering our antics.
At the age of five years old, the doctors detected a tumor in my brain. Since then, all the attention was on me. I received the best food, and the best clothes and everything I wanted because of my condition. After the surgery, I was recovering for four years. During this period my parents, uncles, and grandparents became overprotective of me. They were not aware that I was becoming insecure and unable to develop myself; because there was always somebody who helped me to do my things.
In 1997, I got married. My husband brought me to the United States, and again my husband was very protective with me. He used to say that I did not need to work because he was going to give me everything I needed; then I was resigned to stay home, have my children, and raise them.
In 2000, I heard a friend saying that there was a program in a local church where a group of ladies were teaching English as a second language. I started going to this program and that was how I began to learn English. But, I was living in a good situation at that time for twelve years and I never realized how important it was to learn English.
Then in 2008, my husband fell ill. I then saw the necessity to do something immediately to help myself. I went with my sister-in-law who works for a warehouse. She talked with her supervisor and two weeks later, they called me in to work. The only issue was that I could not speak fluent English. It was hard because my main job was to follow instructions and I did not want to mess up. Although there were persons who spoke English fluently who were willing to help me, I felt ashamed
