Everything stank!!! All areas of their lives were yelling out CHANGE ME!!
A police siren went past adding to the already noisy, crowded and crime filled neighbourhood. Stray dogs barked and roamed the streets fighting with each other over scraps of food left in the gutter. The tomcats would come out of the drains yowling throughout the night in search of a mate. A gang of street kids hung out in the alleyway, waiting for the next person to mug or an unsuspecting new car to steal, take for a joy ride or sell for parts. The police did frequent patrols of the neighbourhood but could do little to impact on the crime level.
Houses and unit blocks lined the streets with iron bars on the windows and reinforced doors. Chairs and tables that could have been stolen had been bolted down to the concrete by the owners. At night the shops hid behind surveillance cameras and iron security gates. The local hospital emergency department overflowed with assault victims and drug overdose cases.
Horns beeped and drivers hurled insults at each other from their car windows. Kids whinged and cried from flea bites as their flustered parents hurried them off to streets into waiting cars.
This was no way for Marg and the kids to live, Vince thought guiltily to himself. But what could they do? At the moment he had no answers. They couldn’t afford to live in a better suburb and there were shortages of rental properties everywhere. He checked the letterbox and groaned as he looked down at the letter in his hand. Yet another bill.
Vince Brown trudged up the long staircase to the front door after a long, tedious day working at the rural supplies factory, where he worked as handy-man and forklift driver, also doing the ordering of more stock when needed. He opened the thick, heavy door to the dark and dinghy rented apartment where the stained and mouldy carpet overwhelmed him. In their bedroom the old sheet that they were using as a curtain was torn. Vince Brown and his wife Marg slept on a mattress on the
