WE STAND, STRANGERS to each other, in the cold and crane our necks towards a glorious gum tree, silent and marvelling as if we were staring at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
Nestled in the crook of a curving branch, a mother tawny frogmouth glares at us while her two impossibly fluffy chicks squat beside her. Mum is awake and wary, her babies blinking wide. More and more people join us – parents on bikes, their infants leaning out of their seats, older couples and curious joggers.
