Gyuri Hollosy

Gyuri Hollósy, a Hungarian American sculptor and artist, was born Ervin György Hollósy in 1946 in Bad Aibling, a small village in the Bavaria region of Germany. His artistic roots can be found on both sides of his family. In 1955, his family moved to Cleveland, where he later studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and then earned his BFA from Ohio University. Hollósy did five and a half years of military service in the US Coast Guard and thereafter resumed his fine arts studies at Tulane University, where he earned his MFA. His first teaching position at Tulane University was followed by faculty positions at Washington University, St. Louis, and Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. In 1988, he moved to New Jersey, where he started as an instructor at the Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture in Mercerville and later became assistant director of their academic program and gallery director. Currently, he is a resident artist at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, where he pursues his work in sculpture and painting. Hollósy’s work is featured in public and private collections in Europe and many parts of the United States and can be viewed on his website (www.hollosy.com).

    ENDORSEMENTS

As an art historian who has known Gyuri Hollósy for many years, I am struck by one of his most recent works in his book Voices In An Artist’s Head, a relief called Fugue In Hornet Mansion (2016). In its organic and mathematical intricacies, it combines reverence for the social intelligence and cooperative ecology of natural architecture with suggestions of the complex, rhythmic variety and contrapuntal voices of Bach’s fugues. Whether intentional or not, its kinetic gesture also seems to evoke the Victory of Samothrace. Its allusive, humanistic synthesis of figuration and abstraction exemplifies a unified vision forged over the course of a lifetime dedicated to the wonder of creation.

I have known Gyuri Hollósy for many years and have been deeply influenced by his sculptures, as well as his searching heart. This current piece of art, this book, is for all people. It is a guide to discover your own unique calling and to be able to express it. This book invites its readers to treasure their own internal message and to dance with the inevitable difficulties of life in such a way that your love shines through whatever you create. What a beautiful combination of words, stories, images and recipes. They speak to all of our senses. With our eyes, we see the artwork and it enlarges our ability to see the world. With our ears we hear the language, sometimes song like, sometimes poetic and haunting, and sometimes simple. With our nose and tongue we smell and taste the wonderful aromas of Gyuri’s favorite foods. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to discover their deepest creative longings.

The reason you absolutely must study and underline this book is that Gyuri Hollósy blazes a clear and sensible path to creative treasures within that the rest of us have yet to exploit. With interest and awe I have for years watched Gyuri creating and listened to his profound musings. In person and in these pages he displays a sheer honesty and ability to turn abstract pondering into useable tools. His artistic talent is exquisite, eccentric, and startlingly exciting. But apart from nimble psyche and fingers, Gyuri melds his desire to impart his message with the deepest needs of his audience. And perhaps the greatest joy is Gyuri greets all life and art with a spice of humor.

    DEDICATION

First and foremost I would like to thank the Almighty. In the process of putting this book together I realized that the gift of writing is as important as creating my sculptures, paintings and drawings. You blessed me with the power to believe in my passion and pursue my dreams; You gave me that dream in the summer of 58’, at a summer camp in a seminary. During the construction of a new chapel, at age 12, I witnessed one of Your monks etch and burnish the saints into large oak pillars using hot poker heated over hot coals. Through the smoke, the crackle, the hiss, I felt the magical desire to be an artist. I could never
