    Dan and Annie

    Foreword

The concept behind the ‘Alphabet Food Safari’ was a simple one. My husband, Dan, and I love food and so, fortunately, do some of our friends. We therefore decided what better way was there to eat, drink and chat, than to have friends over for dinner.

In fact, better than that, we decided that this dinner invitation could actually be more interesting than just having friends over for dinner. Dan and I enjoy food from many different cultures and wondered if any of our friends felt the same. We decided that we could create a monthly event where friends would cook a tapas style dish from a country starting with a specific letter chosen at random. A letter of the alphabet would be picked from a stein at each event and then countries starting with that letter could be considered for the following ‘Alphabet Food Safari’.

The conditions were that all food and utensils needed to be brought to the ‘host house’ and the kitchen needed to be left in the condition in which it was found, hence, no stress or hassle for the host. The dishes would be washed, the counters cleaned and the leftovers taken back with the person who had made it.

So an invitation was crafted and sent to select friends who we thought would be keen, could commit for a year and who would enjoy the challenge of cooking up a storm despite us all being novice cooks. On discussion with keen participants, it was also decided that all recipes chosen needed either to be an original, or to be adapted with a personal flair added. No recipe could be copied exactly, so some were ‘created’.

Naturally changes were made to the concept at the first Alphabet Food Safari. The initial food portions were so large that everyone struggled to eat the final two dishes. It was immediately recommended that all portions should ‘shrink’ for the next event. It was also decided that instead of people’s names being randomly chosen to host the next food safari, a specific ‘host order’ would be created so that people knew in advance and to ensure that the date was suitable to all participants.

One final adaptation to the food safari events was that during the winter months we changed the start time from 7pm to 1pm so that we could still entertain outside and enjoy the weather. This meant that people who did not have a large enough indoor entertaining area could make use of their outdoor patio areas. We were lucky in that every day we had the food safari during the winter months it was sunny and warm. You’ve got to love the beautiful Perth winters.

We have all thoroughly enjoyed this food safari challenge since we have learned so much about food presentation, international cooking and the ways in which flavours can be blended together. We are now continuing the food safari for another year so that we can
