CHAPTER I
INT. RAIN PELTING AGAINST HOUSE ON A VERY DARK NIGHT.
Scene inside small house. Melanie jumps as the shrill of the phone ringing shatters her frayed nerves. She nervously picks up the receiver.
Melanie
He… hello.
Caller
(angry)
Slut.
Melanie
(cries)
Hal, why are you doing this?
No answer… pause.
Hello… hello.
Melanie slams the receiver down. It rings again, she picks it up and hears a click.
Melanie paces for a moment, her dark eyes soften as she walks towards her young children’s bedrooms. She admires Mary for a moment, then goes into Danny’s room and pulls the covers up around him and kisses him on the forehead.
Back in the living room she tidied up.
Suddenly headlights flooded the living room.
Hal saunters in drunk.
Hal
(angry)
Still up… bitch.
Melanie
(anxious)
Hal… we have to talk.
Hal
Fuck you.
He staggered into the bedroom and passed out on the bed. Melanie stayed on the couch with a blanket and pillow, hugging the pillow to her for a long time.
Finally, she sighs, then goes to the phone.
Melanie phoned her friend Sally in the dark and in a low tone talked.
Melanie
Hello… Sally?
Sally
(concerned)
What’s goin on? You OK?
Melanie
Yeah, listen Sally I’m leaving tomorrow. My transfer came through… . We’re at each others throats constantly since he lost his job. He passed out on the bed as soon as he got home, I couldn’t tell him. I’ll leave a note.
Sally
Call as soon as you’re settled. Be careful.
Melanie
Bye Sally. Thanks for everything, you’ve been a real friend.
5 YEARS LATER:
Bright sunny day, scene of a modest bungalow. A 16 year old girl, approaches back door, goes through into the kitchen. Mary had dark hair and eyes and was slender build, smiled at her mother, Melanie, who was busy preparing a meal at the island.
Mary
Hi mom.
Melanie
(pleasant)
You’re up early for a Saturday.
Mary
Yeah, Sara’s dad wanted us to run errands before he would give us the car.
Melanie was as slender as Mary, with light brown hair and dark green eyes.
Melanie
Must be starved… . here hon, made your favourite.
As she placed the plate in front of Mary, the backdoor opened again. It was Danny, dark hair and eyes like Mary only he was muscular build, happy-go-lucky. He pretended to dribble his basketball then tried to bounce it off Mary’s head.
Melanie
Watch it… .
. . . . she put up her hand.
He pretended to try the same with her and then spun on his heel out of the room.
Melanie
raising her voice… I told you…
Danny
. . . . yeah, yeah mom I know, not in the house.
He gave her a quick squeeze as he came back into the kitchen. Then sat next to his sister at the same time trying to snatch her food.
Mary slapped his fingers.
Mary
Watch it geek!
Melanie placed Danny’s lunch in front of him.
Danny
Thanks.
Melanie
Any plans this afternoon?
Danny shook his head no while stuffing his face.
Mary a little upset.
You said you were helping out with the car wash.
Danny ignores Mary.
Melanie
Thought if you weren’t doing anything you could come with me. Forgot, Mary did mention you were going with them this afternoon.
Danny bounced out of his chair carrying his plate to the sink, doing a balancing act with it like a waiter.
Mary
(cheerful)
Gotta get changed. Sara will be by soon.
Mary darted for her bedroom.
Just then the phone rings.
Mary and Danny dash for the phone in the living room
Mary and Danny
It’s for me.
. . . . both grabbing for the receiver, playful tug-of-war. Danny pulled it from Mary’s grasp.
Danny
It’s for you, mom…
. . . . held out the receiver, then headed outside with his basketball.
Melanie
Don’t grab Danny… . Hello, oh hi Sue. Yes, just finished lunch. I’ll shower, be by shortly. Bye
Mary
Where are you off to mom?
Melanie
Sue and I have some business to finish up. Won’t be too late.
How’s the car wash going?
Mary
Great! Loads of fun. I have to hurry and get changed.
Started towards her room again.
Melanie
Left a snack in the fridge. Sue and I will grab something later.
Mary
Mom! You told Danny not to grab.
Laughing teasingly as she went to her bedroom. Melanie cleared the rest of the table and wiped the counter, and put the
