    (letter to employer)

    Dear Madam Carmenlita

This is Marianna, the lady you just fired from the cleaning job at your hotel, or shall we call it Brothel?! Yes, I’m Naive and when I applied for this Cleaning job, I thought it was a cleaning job, but you kept on telling me You are not doing your job properly Marianna….

So, I tried to work harder, but it didn’t impress you, you introduced me to the other woman, who you said was a cleaner from Argentina, I have never seen her doing any cleaning around the hotel, which you said was a hotel for customers that only used the rooms for few hours as they were having affairs; I thought it was unusual but never understood that what you really wanted was a prostitute not a cleaner, that’s why I only saw the Argentinian cleaner greeting the customers (mostly fellows) and I never saw her doing any cleaning; obviously she had to prostitute herself to stay in Spain. Only once she helped me clean the room but only to talk funny, all about sex, I’m sure you sent her to try to persuade me (indirectly) to greet the customers too, as a prostitute obviously.

As I’m young and naïve, I didn’t realise you sent her to explain it to me. She told me once: The boss sleeps with the porter and her husband as a Threesome, you know?! I thought she was just a bit dirty and unusual when she told me these things. I also thought you were being different when you asked me to clean your flat at the end of the hotel, and when I got there you took a camera and suggested that we did photographs; I found it silly and unusual but as you are the boss, I smiled and said That looks fun!. You asked me to put on a tiger skin bikini. I wasn’t keen on it, you were smiling but you were firm, and you are the boss, so I did put the bikini on, then you said: Now you look sexy, take it off! Do you mean get naked?!!! Do it like you were posing for your boyfriend! so I decided to put my foot down I haven’t got a boyfriend!!!! then you persisted Just try it you could be a model! then I refused No, just do the photos with the bikini on!

YES, I stopped you there, and then you just told me Just go back to the hotel and finish your job! so naïvely I asked What about your flat, you wanted me to clean it… Just go! you said annoyed. Until the end of the month you kept telling me I wasn’t doing the job properly, but I worked so hard, so I didn’t understand why you complained; the end of the month came and you called me to the reception/office, you opened the money box to pay me and said as you didn’t do your job properly, this is your last day working here! I was shocked and told you But I worked hard!! You continued speaking And as you didn’t do your job properly I’m deducting 10 thousand pesetas out of your wages! and you gave me the money ignoring my protests.

Yes, I left very annoyed; went back to my shared flat lay on the bed and went through my thoughts recalling the events of the month at my job, and finally I came to the conclusion that it was my naiveness that prevented me from realising that: yes you were not definitely looking for a cleaner!! So, maybe the porter informed you, that someone threw a stone at your office window, YES that was me, by the way I couldn’t be bothered to take legal action against you, but don’t be surprised if I tell your customers that I know that what you are doing is illegal, and you might find that I might throw a few more stones at your windows!! next time you advertise for a cleaner when you really want a prostitute, just put Hostess wanted

    Sincerely Marianna

    Spain 1989

I was in Spain, in Andalusia, I was 19 years old and had just left the convent where I grew up.

As I grew up on my own, with no one to look after me, the Spanish nuns embraced me, they took me in their hearts and helped me. Unfortunately going to church and praying every day came with the package.

The nuns were strict but kind too, but I wanted to be independent, so I run off from the first convent, when I was 14 years old, just to find out that no one would give me a job at that age, at least not in Andalusia, so I had no choice but to return to the convent; but as I wanted a change, I had a brilliant idea, I asked around for a different convent, as there was plenty of those in Spain, in those days. So I went to another convent, they didn’t refuse to help me, but they asked me questions and more more questions, so at the end I just gave them the details of the previous convent, just to avoid any further questioning, I stopped running from convent to convent though. At the age of 18, I was too old to be looked after. The nuns told me that they couldn’t pay for my education any longer, so they found me jobs instead, cleaning jobs, and I hated cleaning!!

I got fired from my first cleaning job just one week after I started it. Apparently the boss told the nuns that I had no idea how to look after the house. They complained that I ate all the food and sweets that were meant to be for the youngsters, and to finalise her complaints, she said that I had no idea how to cook.

When I came back to the convent, the nuns decided to start teaching me how to cook, which they done previously, but they said I didn’t pay attention to them and they said I had a Couldn’t be bothered! attitude. This was true, I never bothered or paid attention to their wise lessons.

The nuns found me a few other jobs, but the longest I stayed in a job and survived, was 2 months. When I returned to the nuns (every time I got fired), the complaints were the same, can’t cook, can’t clean!.

I’m probably the youngest person in the world, with the biggest record of jobs I was fired from!!!!

I was cheesed off with being fired, and the nuns were more and more annoyed and told me Jobs don’t come easy, you have to make an effort to keep it! To make matters worse, the nuns said that I was becoming very rude and I used rude and sinful language, the truth was that I learned all those words from the teenagers I looked after in my jobs. I also started asking the other ladies in the convent questions about sex. One of the them went to the nun in charge of our dormitory and told her about my sinful questions and nude magazines. Apparently, the nuns had a meeting in the superior nun’s office and called me there. They told me I was bringing sin to the house of god, and I couldn’t stay in the convent any more. They said Our ladies, have to be Pure and Warm Hearted! (they meant the other students residing in the convent). I asked them how would I find a job? They replied You can use the office phone and the newspapers, but as you have a bit of money stashed from your previous jobs, you can use that money to pay for a cheap hotel room.

I left with my luggage (only two bags), and when I got out of the front door, an idea came to my head…Why not go to another city in Andalusia and get a job there, and also do a bit of travelling!!! And that’s what I did, I took the train to Cordoba. As I arrived, I realised that I didn’t have much money left, so I inquired if there was any convents for adult working ladies and I was redirected to the local convent.

The nuns at this new Covent (it was new to me, but it was a very old building, made of stone, cold, but had modern furniture on the inside), they asked me questions, and I told them as little as possible, I told them I was French, but one of the nuns spoke French and said I didn’t have a French accent (I was good with languages though), she asked You are not telling us fibs are you? so I told them quickly Ok, you caught me there, I’m actually English, and came to Spain to make a new start! I didn’t want to tell them I was thrown out of the last convent, for being sinful. Alright, what are you hiding, you showed us you spoke French and English, you seem to be good with languages but you are not either, tell us where did you live previously!

I start sobbing, and told them I run away from my first convent and then was helped by another convent just to be thrown out for buying sinful naked magazines, I was only curious!!! I clarified my reasons to buying those nude magazines. The nuns whispered to each other for a few minutes and came back to me after awhile and said We have decided to take you in. We want you to reassure us though that you are not going to bring sinful material, alcohol, or drugs, to this House of God, and you can’t use rude or aggressive language either, understood?!!

Yes Sister. I jumped in the air and gave them a big smile.

I moved in to a double room, with another girl, 19 years old called Maribell, which was her nickname, she was friendly and was in her first year at university. Maribell showed me the convent, introduced me to some of the other ladies residents at the convent, some were students, some were working.

When I was a bit settled and unpacked, I decided to write a letter to the former convent, my letters are usually a bit spiteful and resentful, but as the letter was to the nuns, I made it a bit subtle and only a little bit resentful.

    Dear Sister Mary

This is Marianne, who you so kindly helped growing up in your convent, because I had no friends or family, I do appreciate that you put me through college/education. BUT, I do not believe that you had to throw me out because I had NUDE magazines on me, The rude language, i’d like to clarify that I learned at the jobs you found me, the teenagers, there, were from rich families but they used vulgar language which they used to insult or annoy me. I’m glad I left those jobs, I didn’t get along with the kids there.

Anyway I’m not writing to you to complain or annoy you, but I’m bit resentful, that’s all! I’m in a new town, new convent and new job. I made acquaintance with the other ladies in this new convent, most of them are at university, but a few of them are in paid jobs; my room mate is at university too, and we get along fine.

    Wish you all well.

    God bless, sincerely Marianne
