About this ebook

No two marriages are the same, but success has a pattern. It is not by accident. It can be taught and learnt. This also applies to success in marriage. This is the purpose of this book. It is a standard textbook for marriage.

Understanding Marriage is a practical guide to a successful marriage. The author, after giving a lot of quotations of great men and women concerning marriage (consisting of the good, the bad, and the ugly), goes ahead to give different definitions of marriage and guidance to courtship, love, and submission. All causes of problems in marriage are fully covered, with frequently asked questions fully answered.

The book is a panacea to those marriages that are hurting, a must-read for intending couples, and a handbook for marriage counsellors.

    PREFACE

God instituted marriage. It is the will of God for marriages to work so that his heritage, children, would be brought up in a peaceful, love-filled environment. However, many marriages today are short of the ideal.

Many couples have wrong notions of what marriage is all about. The various notions about marriage, right or wrong, are captured in the various quotations in some parts of this book, whose sources are hereby acknowledged, particularly the Happy Wives Club. Some do not even know how they got into marriage. Instead of looking for a way forward, they are looking for a way out. Marriage is to be enjoyed and not endured, as the popular saying goes.

It is imperative to understand marriage before going into it. Several definitions of marriage have been examined. Then, what is an ideal marriage? From the survey conducted by the author, a marriage is said to be perfect or ideal if, and only if,

    1. It starts with God and stays with God.

    2. It is blessed with children.

    3. It is romantically satisfying and sexually fulfilling.

    4. It is generally accepted by the in-laws.

    5. It is rich enough to provide for the need, not the greed, of every member of the family

    6. There is rich fellowship between the couple.

Is this achievable? That’s the subject of this book. It is a handbook for singles, a must read for marriage counselors and a prescription to those whose marriages are presently hurting.
