My mission is to give, for giving is what I do best to use this experience as a classroom to grow. I see value as the basis for respect, decisions, and action and look to make a conscious effort to pause and assess my attitude. I am a child of God and look to measure up to those I serve. Furthermore, I look to solve problems with a positive attitude of fundamental change in my perception that believes you can do anything you set your mind to. I love working with older adults and disabled persons. My path took a long and sometimes difficult road while holding down various positions. I’m not telling you this to give accolades to myself, only to give you insight into my own life on how I observe people’s lives and attitude changes while being asked to learn, serve entirely new and different ways of thinking, behaving, communicating, and motivating others. One thing that is clear is that I have realized one must change their outmoded attitudes and process goals in order to be successful with change. The material in this book is based on my experience as a certified nursing assistant working in the long-term care of human profession. I hope you walk away with a changed attitude while engaging your thoughts through each processed goals because positive attitudes are possible when you let go of outmoded ones and allow your mind to keep busy with positive thoughts to build a new normal natural attitude for yourself.

When my son Logan was being interviewed for a school at seven, he was asked how he described his personality and in his own natural attitude Logan said, it’s like a rainbow, that told me he has a fine blend of many characters, as you process your attitude and begin to put your signature mark on the world find your rainbow of words that describe you like, gentle, compassionate, kind, merciful, patient and tenderhearted. It would be good if each us of incorporate a rainbow attitude and share some of these same qualities with others as we process our life goals. Remember words are like seeds and grow in the minds of the people we serve.

This book is dedicated to my husband, John Larose; my mother, Gloria Christmas-Smallwood; my stepfather, Paul Smallwood; my three sons, Chad Jr., Dylan, and Logan Morton; and all my friends and family who have provided me with great support.

To all the CNAs I worked with thank you for your healing hands and support through my tired moments.

To my mother (Gloria Christmas-Smallwood) thank you for your support and having faith in me when the journey sometimes looked unsteady.

To my husband, John, thank you for your love and helping me stay focused on writing this book. I’ll always love you.

To my children Chad Jr., Dylan & Logan your love encourages me and gives me strength to process my goals. I am blessed to be your mother.

    CARING NATURAL ATTITUDES

You work in a setting where health, healing, time, and quality of life are priceless.

    —Tina S. Larose

I know what you are thinking: another day at the job, right? Except you must understand that yesterday’s work is now today, and today will be another! And by the way, I’m glad you were blessed to see another day. So forget about how your day left off yesterday and how good, bad, easy, hard, or laid back it was. It’s been charted!

A new day has been assigned and you have a new task, a new assignment, and new smiles to deliver. You must be a direct care professional from the inside out. Understand that many residents have pain to manage, and many times you have to forget yourself and your own mental pain to take care of others. Once you do, all of your pain goes to the side because today, like all the other days, you decided to make somebody’s day better. Today, tomorrow, and every day after you will be singing AAYA . . . AAYA . . . YA . . . YA . . . YA because you have a job that gratifies; you get paid to help people live a quality life while rehabilitating their needs, while your goals are processing. This includes pleasing management because they are thrilled each and every shift your presence is accounted for. Families, brothers, sisters, daughters, sons, husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, residents, even your employer depend on you, but not just for being at work and accounted for but for the high-level work performance you deliver each day. Yes, even after you had performed your best day just yesterday.

So today begin your work day and be ready to work hard with AAYA and process the goals you placed on hold for whatever reason. Turn bad days and bad attitudes around and use your ability to be successful to touch lives as a joyful CNA serving others for a purpose.

Too often many of you wear yourselves out before the day begins, worried and upset about your assignment, someone else’s assignment, frustrated because you may not like your job, worried about your children, your finances. You have not been defeated; restore your heart with joy and a positive attitude. You don’t have to be
