Diary of a North American Researcher in Brazil Iii
()
About this ebook
The volume brings to the present moments lived in Brazil and is written much more in the framework of a travel diary in Brazil. Short vignettes about people and places flavor the book. There is emphasis on academic conferences with many Brazilian Stories, the publication of works in Brazil, and more important, times shared with cordel poets, professors and researchers of Brazilian literature, folklore and popular literature in verse.
Something new in this final phase of research, writing and professional life was the time spent in the city of So Paulo, at first glance an unlikely place for a student of folklore. A special moment was the participation in a unique event: 100 Years of Cordel sponsored by the SESC-POMPEIA in 2001 in that city. Others were with cordel poets and poet-singers in the Northeastern Cultural Center in So Paulo, and with Srgio Miceli of the University of So Paulo Press and Plnio Martins of Ateli Press, dealing with the publication of Currans final research efforts in Brazil.
And lastly the book recalls fondly the time spent with friends who were with me in moments of happiness but also of solitude and some loneliness. I dedicate the book to all of them: cordel poets, researchers, professors, writers, friends, and to the person who sustained me most, my wife Keah.

About The Author
Published Books
Dedication
Looking again at Retrato do Brasil em Cordel
by Ateliê Publishing Company in 2011 in São Paulo and seeing the Thank you
page, one sees the people from the Brazilian academic world who facilitated research in Brazil from the initial year of 1966 through 2002. I consider Retrato
to be the most serious, most complete and best researched and written books of all my efforts to capture the story of the Brazilian literatura de cordel.
Now in 2016, completing the series Stories I Told My Students
in this third volume of anecdotes of trips to Brazil, I would like to use yet another list. The reader will note that Volume I of this series had the title of Adventures,
the second Chronicle,
and now in Volume III Diary.
There is a reason for this choice of words. The purpose of the narration has changed and evolved over the years. In this narrative of the final moments spent in Brazil – research, travels, conferences, book publication and book signings, tourism, socializing, solitude and sadness, happiness and moments of triumph – the tone of the narration is different. This final volume is essentially an account based on trip diaries.
I will of course write of intellectual moments at the conferences, the quirks of such events in Brazil, the talks given, but equally important are the encounters with new friends, poets of cordel,
iconic figures of northeastern culture in Brazil, and perhaps most important encounters with old friends who took care of me in both happy and difficult moments over the years. In sum, it is the continuation of the love affair with Brazil, the Brazilians, the literatura de cordel,
and the support of friends in Brazil and of my wife Keah over the years. To all them I dedicate this book. The list will be chronological with encounters in this volume from 1988 to 2005.
