About this ebook

There are reflections on life; then, there are truer reflections. It took a six-year hiatus for poet F.M. Bonevento to return to the written word, but he does so now with passion, wit, and a better understanding of things he thought he once knew. He now knows with certainty that time passes, and, as it does, we change and gain deeper understandings.

The Ashen Song reflects Boneventos increasing concerned for the future of humanity and our uncertain fate. The Moons Song recalls an evening spent studying the autumn moon in a shimmering Texas sky. His work goes beyond observation and into the realm of science, as well, due to the authors lasting fascination with the relationship between the power of human thought and the infinite depth of the universe around us.

Boneventos first two collections prepared him for this, his third and most powerful volume yet. His words bring resolution to the flights of heart and mind that visit our days here on Earth. The winds of time blow us back and forth; emotional winds shape us into who we are and who we will become. Take another, closer look at your life and hear the words on the winds.

    Dedications:

For My Mary Ann, who always is my inspiration.

More verses to please her mind and touch her heart.

For Mike and Jeff, some words of encouragement and reflection.

For Kate and Joe, thoughts to encourage you to find your own voice.

Recalling English Professor Doctor Roderick Marshall of Brooklyn College, who believed in my writing long ago.

    Preface

"After the easy cascade of novel subjects, comes the calm of reflection, where ideas and words seem somehow distant, and vague. Thoughts, striving to become sharper. Second thoughts arising.

Delayed notions, perhaps, deeper reflections, than what proceeded, in bursts of unconsidered stanzas. Perhaps, such reflections reveal sharper images than their antecedents.

Such is the nature of mind, the maker of all verse and prose.

Mind, seeking to amplify, and illuminate what seems left unsaid.

Second thoughts, striving for truer reflections."

These were my thoughts, as I started writing verse again, after a pause of six years. Writing again in hopes of finding deeper insights, hence, the title, Second Thoughts.

Second Thoughts is my third published collection of poems. Unlike my other books, many poems are presented as ideas and thoughts arrived over the course of time. In this sense, the presentation is hopefully more spontaneous and organic in structure.

The second section Songs on the Winds is more topical reflecting my encounters with the winds that seemed to shape my life.

I invite the reader to sample the poems using the table of contents as a guide seeking what may appeal to them, rather than a sequential reading.

As in my other books of verse, I hope some enjoyment and insight comes to those who scan these pages.

    Second Thoughts

    The Last Poet

Who are you the masses say?

    Phrased allusions are so passé

Tell us quickly, what you may

No time have we for verbal play.

Still he writes though none may read

For he must strive to fill his need.

A poet writes a dying breed.

He seeks to paint what moves his soul

To grace with art, the world he knows.

Alas, no need for this his art, for crowds speak plain, and rush about

He sits alone, to weave his words

Writ in silence, and never heard.

    The Ashen Song

    How does it sound?

Not with notes, rather with the rustling hum of dusty silence.

A stream of flowing memories, ebbing away, drifting off onto the winds of hazy forgetfulness never revisited again

Aging newsprint, yellowed and blackened, falling into formless flecks of unreadable words

Words, becoming nothing more than meaningless glyphs.

Sounds that will never pass lips, nor gladden the
