TESTIMONY
In November 1998, myself and a co-worker were carrying an armoire down
a flight of stairs. It had to be all of 400lbs. I was on the lower side, walking
backwards down the stairs, hands on the legs as I navigated. All of a
sudden, I felt the weight of this wood cabinet shift. I did not know at that time
that he had let it go. The armoire was slowly pushing me back. I called out to
my co-worker. Silence. That’s when I knew something was wrong. Had he
warned me, I could’ve put a shoulder under the base, but there was no
warning. I glanced back to see what kind of space I had. There were 8 steps
to go. And at the bottom of the stairs was a wall about 4’ back. I pushed up
on the piece, ’cause I didn’t want it to topple over and top ending me. As I
began my descending I tried to get a feel for how close I was to the wall.
Bam, just that quick. The legs of this monster pinned my wrist to the wall. I
was dazed. The piece of furniture rested half on the steps and the other half
on the wall with me underneath and the base of my neck on the wall flush.
