For my late grandmother and father,

and
Ulysses Sylvester Grant Jr.
Acknowledgments
This book owes its origin to none other that Paulette Shantee’ Boanes, who for many years has shaped many of the poems that this book has come to know. Her savvy and witty appeal has mastered the art that I have captured in writing such amicable and endearing poetry for you all to embrace and share. I am eternally grateful for her inspiration and congenial guidance as the manuscript was being formulated into this unforeseen work of art. I am equally grateful to my late grandmother Virginia Grant and my late father Ulysses S. Grant Jr. who had been two of my biggest supporters in writing poetry. However, none bigger that my grandmother who I began writing poetry for while away in college to allow her to feel that I was right beside her as I embarked on a journey in search of attaining a higher education for myself, feeling guilty having left her back home. I would also like to acknowledge my brothers Shawn Sylvester Hall, Khalief Duval Mason and Tyrell Vernon Hall, who have also served as forms of inspiration and support throughout this miraculous journey I have been on searching for the right time to display this art that many proclaim to be a talent. Also, to my ever loving sister Laverne Hall for her many challenging, yet articulate ways of revising my presentation and delivery methods through her conventional conversation and maternal declarations. Finally, my mother. My soul reason for publishing this book. Stephanie Connor has been more than I could have ever asked for as far as a mother, friend and symbol of guidance and the most prominent role model I know to date. Her laughter, tears, infectious smile and jovial mannerisms are what continue to drive me to become an even better person as the years continue to mount on our joyous lives. The readers, you too inspire me to become an even better writer, in which I may continue to be able to serve you the material that you have before you now. I am certain I am among many authors that are appreciative of your knowledgeable guidance.
Part One
Essence
Always . . . .
Damn, we’ve been through some hard times,
Always yours, Always mine . . . .
I never looked away when I saw your face,
Even when I spoke badly about you,
it was because I missed your face.
Every time I saw you I tried to smile,
Meanwhile, faking like everything was fine.
It always seemed like you saw the hurt that we both felt throughout
that length of time,
Always yours, Always mine . . . .
We argued and fought for all of the wrong reasons,
Even though I missed you through all of those lonely seasons,
To be able to help you fight or even just to speak,
was more than enough for me even though at one time it seemed so obsolete.
You son was born, my nephew, like me,
premature at birth giving you automatic memories of me,
Now we seem closer but yet so far apart,
But never make the mistake of thinking that you all are never
away from my heart.
The battle is over and we have much grown,
Now we have to remain close
even though we each have a life of our own.
So until forever you will always be a part of me,
and until the end of time it will be . . . .
Always you, always me . . . .
If today was the last time
If today was the last time I could tell you something,
I would smile I would say nothing.
I would not talk I’d just move real close,
And hold you in my arms and smell your clothes,
I’d rub your hair and touch your lips,
And gently place a soft sweet kiss,
Upon your neck and rub your back,
And lick your ear from front to back,
I’d close my eyes and rub your frame,
And continue my search until I hear my name,
If today was the last time, there would be no goodbye,
It would be the first time we didn’t talk and let our bodies decide.
Who I am . . . .
As distant as I seem, I am a lot closer than you think,
If ever you are lost or in trouble, I will be there so don’t
