In the End Jesus Was My Gangster - D. L. Terrell

    CHAPTER 1

    AS A YOUNGSTER

It has been months since I lost my mother to cancer. The school told my dad I was acting out because of the lost. He never really said anything he just looked at me at me on the way home and said Charles what am I go do with you? I put my head down and stared at the ground, as he constantly said he wishes mom was around without her he seemed helpless. My father worked two jobs so he really did not have enough time for us. He worked hard to take care of us but between rent and bills we never got anything new. My older brother Wayne always came home with new stuff like shoes, phones anything that was cool. I guess he had a nice girlfriend. As I sat on the couch waiting on dad to come in I saw a book on the coffee table called the bible I picked it up and before I could open to see what was inside dad came in with my little sister kasha. She’s three years of age my aunt Sug keeps her while my dad goes to work. I spent most of my time alone until he gets home. Wayne locks himself in the room until bedtime, that’s when he got to let me in to go to sleep. Dad do not know about all the gifts he has. In front of him he wears his payless specials, when he get to school he pull out his Air Jordan, I wish I had a pair of them but when I mention it to my father he tells me to stop trying to be like other people. After supper I went up to bed as I lay down. Wayne I said, yeah what do you want? What is the bible I asked? It’s a book about our creator. He laid there looking at me as I tried to understand what he ment by that. After a while he rolled over and went to sleep. I could remember my mother holding that book when they wheeled her in for surgery. I could hear her talking to the air but not knowing what she was saying. Wayne, I yelled, he jumped up looked at me with a mean face and said what boy? Even though he was mad I stilled asked who was mom talking to when she held the bible? GOD, she was praying to GOD. Anymore question? No, good now let me sleep. I turned over to my side and said

A Prayer: Dear GOD if you can hear me can you please help my dad take care of us and help him be strong.

My brother said in a tired voice don’t forget to say amen, Amen I said.

A knock on the door waking me, its been three years now and I still wasn’t use to my dad waking me up. I hated going to school, Johnny, and his crew always bother me. Are you up boy pop’s yelled? Yeah I’m up. Dad said I’m starting to smell my own butt since I turned fourteen. I didn’t think so. After school I came in and know body was home. I went to the frig there’s nothing in there, old bread, baken soda and the water jug. I’m tired of coming home to nothing to eat. I pray every night for my dad I suppose this is his plan for us, to be broke and hungry 90% of the time. Dad came in a few short hours later and said where’s Wayne? I looked at him and said I don’t know. He acted like I suppose to keep up with him 24/7. He looked back at me and said boy I tell you. I watched him go in to the kitchen and I said, what’s for dinner today, he said did you not eat at school. I was pissed at this point I went up stairs and laid down. I dozed of for a while, my brother woke me up and said you alright, yes, I’m fine just a little hungry, you didn’t eat today? No, dad did not have money for grocery. He said I’ll be back, he climbed out the window and a couple of minutes later he came back with pizza, here bro he said, thanks bro.

This was the morning I awoke with a chip on my shoulder. I laid down every night wondering when things were going to get better, at this point I was tired of waiting. As we walked to school my brother Wayne and I was trying to figure out how we go to the same school and I never see him until after. As we entered the building, Wayne walked me to my class, and said I’ll see you at the house I got something to do, okay I said, be good he said. I walked into class already Johnny was looking at me. So I walked to my seat with my head down. As I sat down Mrs. Levi said Charles Bentley nice of you to join us. How was your weekend? I had to make up something because I didn’t do anything, like Lisa she went shopping with her mother, or Danny he went to the movies, I couldn’t afford nothing like that. My big lie was I went to the arcade. All the students thought that it was cool. Even Johnny liked it. I felt good all day
