    Introduction

I was born in Kelly, North Carolina on September9,1953; to the late Archie and Catherine Simpson. I’m the youngest of 13 children; seven are deceased. I trust this book will encourage you, and touch your heart.

    My Childhood

During my childhood, we farmed to make a living. My mother taught me how to sew and cook, wash cloths and take care of home. My father showed me how to plant and grow vegetables. My brother and sister taught me how to make toys out of a wagon wheel so that we could ride it like a merry go-round. We used a rope for a swing, hanging from a tree and had a jumping board that was also used as a seesaw.

I loved dolls. I used to pull up grass and wash the dirt out of the root and use a stick to wrap the root into curls. Then I would tie a string around it for my doll’s dress. We didn’t have money to buy toys back then, so we had to be content with what we had. We would go to play with other children and shared our toys. I regret when I couldn’t go places like other kids.

Sometimes we even had to survive on biscuit sandwiches and worn out shoes with cardboard inside to keep our feet off the ground; especially when it was cold outside. When it rained, the cardboard would get wet and drop out the bottom of the shoe … how well I remember.

I attended elementary school at Natmore in Kelly, North Carolina. I went to East Arcadia High School in Riegelwood, N. C., and after the first year, we were transferred to Elizabethtown, N.C.

As I began to grow and learn that things should have been better than what they were; I realized that I was not capable of handling the disappointments. Not only was farm work hard for me, which was our means of living, but I did not like being blamed for something I did not do, nor the punishment I received for what someone else did. I suppose I was blamed because I was the youngest, but that didn’t make it right.

    Running Away From Home

In 1969 around May or June, my father came home one Saturday night, intoxicated. I guess he assumed I
