Evan and I
What Color is Black, What Color is White?
Pearl and I are the very best of friends, have been since grade school, we live back to back streets from each other.
Now, I live in my own apartment. There is a young girl in the next apartment, We are good friends, her name is Jan.
She invited me to go home to the country with her for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
On Wednesday Jan and I went to see mom then we were off to the country.
Grandpa, didn’t seem to be to friendly, but I said to myself, (you will like me oh yes, you will). Then I winked and smiled at him. A quick smile came to his lips, but he didn’t want me to see it.
Jan’s parents and her older brother had not made it home yet.
At 5:00 A. M. Thursday morning I couldn’t sleep. I went out in the backyard in the cool morning air. Standing with my back to the side walk I folded my arms against the wind.
Someone offered me a coat, thank you, this feels good, then we turned to face each other, our eyes met and for about five seconds we just stared at each other.
Jan screamed E-V-A-N!!!. Evan you are here, he turn to look at her with his eyes still on me.
Jan said Evan this is my friend Ebony, Ebony this my old brother Evan. Older not old he said.
I gave him back his coat. He disappeared into the kitchen, Jan & I flew up the stairs.
At breakfast, I begin to feel depressed so, I excused myself and went to sit on the bench in the backyard.
Tears began to roll down my cheeks. Soon grandpa came to sit down on the bench, when he sat down, I got up but, he asked me to sit back down so I did. With tears still running down my face, he gave me a quick hug and said don’t cry baby you are not alone. I just had a long talk with Evan. The different is, he is smiling from ear to ear, you don’t see it but I am smiling to, now why are you crying?
It was not easy but I told him that I had been raped and would never let a man hurt me like that again. We sat there quietly for about three minutes then he left.
I walked down and sat behind the big tree, so I couldn’t be seen from the house. I was so ashamed, why did I tell him, who would he tell?
Evan walked up, hi there, I have been looking for you. He lifted me up and held me close to him, we just stood there, not talking at all. me thinking, thank God grandpa didn’t tell
.
I broke the silence. I need to go home.
What? Why? He asked.
I would rent a car but I can’t drive. You can’t drive?
I will teach you, now you have to stay so I can teach you.
No, I can’t I must go now before. Before what? He asked.
I pulled away from him and started walking toward the house. He caught up with me, took my hand in his.
If you really want to go home I will drive you.
Okay. Once in the house I told Jan that something had come up and I need to go home.
Evan talked most of the way home about his life, how he was once engaged but it didn’t workout.
When we made our arrival on the street there was a car blocking the driveway so we stopped in front of the house next door, the family was in the front yard.
When I got out of the car, Mark Jr. came running with his little short legs and his arms reaching for me. I scooped him up in my arms, this felt good.
I put him down, as soon as I did he grabbed my finger.
I introduced everyone then we went to my apartment.
Would you like something to eat or drink? No thank you. Well what do you want? You were nice enough to bring me home I need to do something for you, I am a good cook.
He took my hand and led me to the sofa. There
