Author

Meniere Man

At the height of his business career the author became acutely ill. He was diagnosed with Meniere's disease, but the full impact of having Meniere's disease was to come later. He was to lose not only his health, but his career. He began to lose all hope that he would fully recover a sense of wellbeing. But it was his personal spirit and desire to get "back to normal" that made him not give up to a life of Meniere's symptoms of severe vertigo, dizziness and nausea. He decided that you can't put a limit on anything in life. Rather than letting Meniere's disease take over his life, he started to focus on what to do about getting over Meniere's disease symptoms without surgery or drug dependency. Meniere Man believes that if you want to experience a marked improvement in health you can't wait until you feel well to start. You must begin to improve your health now, even though you don't feel like it. The more you do, the more you can do. These days life is different for the Author. He made a full recovery. He does not take any medication. All the physical activities he enjoys these days require a high degree of balance and equilibrium: snowboarding, surfing, hiking, windsurfing, weight training. Following his own advice, he continues to avoid salt, stress, takes vitamins, exercises regularly and maintains a positive, mindful attitude. With a smile and a sense of humor, the Author pens himself as Meniere Man, because, as he says, Meniere's disease is the one thing that changed his life dramatically. The Author is a writer and artist. He is married to a Poet and Essayist. They have two adult children. He enjoys the sea, cooking, travel, the great company of family, friends and his beloved dog Bella.

    Meniere Man And The Astronaut

If you have been diagnosed with Meniere’s disease, you’re in good company. There have been many famous Meniere sufferers, such as Martin Luther the Augustinian monk, Beethoven the composer, Vincent Van Gogh the artist, Jonathan Swift the author, Peggy Lee the singer, Emily Dickinson the poet, Tim Conley the professional golfer, Dana White the UFC boss, Huey Lewis the singer/songwriter, Kyle Walpole the climber, Alan Shepard the astronaut, and yours truly!

In The Self-Help Book For Meniere’s Disease, I have written down aspects relevant to people diagnosed with Meniere’s. All the books are based on my personal experience of having had Meniere’s disease.

When I was diagnosed with Meniere’s disease, I was forty-six. A fit man at the height of my professional career, a partner in a multi-million dollar business, happily married, with a young family of two. I had climbed a long way up the career ladder, thinking the only way was up. Little did I know how hard I would fall. Meniere’s caused me to lose my career and material stability.

Not only was it devastating news to be diagnosed, but it was extremely difficult to know what to do or how to cope. I wasn’t given any real answers about Meniere’s disease. Medical professionals don’t agree on the prognosis or outcome of Meniere’s. This makes it difficult for sufferers to know the present or plan the future. Meniere’s comes as a bewildering shock.

At the time of my diagnosis, there was little information about the disease or how to manage the symptoms. There were a few medical books on the subject which gave me no idea what to expect or how to manage the condition effectively. What I did know was the acute attacks of vertigo were breaking my spirit. As well as trying to cope with vertigo attacks, the loss of life’s equilibrium gave me an increasing worry about where Meniere’s disease was taking my family and me.

For the first time in my life, I had a constant sense of anxiety and fear. I was at a complete loss. The specialists and doctors couldn’t give me definitive answers on how to manage the condition. So how would I cope and get well again? I decided to take responsibility for figuring out how to overcome this condition.

How would I go from Meniere sufferer to Meniere survivor? Life had thrown its curve ball. Meniere’s made a massive impact on my life but I did make a full recovery. Working through the condition from illness to wellness has enabled me to help others, and write the Meniere Man series.

There is a saying, It takes one to know one. Unlike a medical text, this book is from the point-of-view of someone who has been there. I know the boundaries of this demanding disease. I understand what you are going through. I have been in the depths of despair. In my mind, I associate Meniere attacks as the most frightening experiences of my life. The out-of-control vertigo creates emotional, mental, social, and physical uncertainty. But despite diagnosis, you will be able, through determination and effort, to regain a sense of power, and equilibrium in your life, when you have hope.

As human beings, we need to have control over our lives, and confidence in where we are going. Not being in control unnerves us. Not being able to find answers exasperates the anxiety we feel. The more anxious we get, the worse we feel. We get lost in the symptoms of Meniere’s disease, but having the right information can be a map back to our sense of inherent well-being.

In times of serious illness, we need hope and a belief in a positive outcome. Hope and belief give us the strength to overcome the inertia of disabling effects.

I not only understand the devastating effects of having Meniere’s disease, but how Meniere’s can have a beneficial impact. Meniere’s makes you listen to your body.
