    Dedication

I dedicate this book to my best friend growing up, my mother Elma Jean Porter Masterson. Without her example and a healthy attitude toward life, I wouldn’t have written this book. Through my journey writing this book I could feel her beautiful warm spirit surrounding and comforting me when I didn’t think I could make it happen.

Because of her love for life and others, I honor her as one of the greatest human beings I have ever known. She is my guardian angel and a remarkable and noble woman. She was a modern pioneer.

In this book you will get to know her and you will see for yourself the love and passion she had for life.

Here are some words of wisdom, she wrote in her journal years ago.

I pray that my posterity be positive, cheerful, and happy living a life as near as Jesus would have lived. Love yourself, use mistakes and tragedies as stepping stones.

Be kind, considerate and understanding of self, others and to your Creator. Be a good example, remember the good in people and overlook their faults. Do not let discouragement get to you. Make the most of what you have.

Multiply your talents. Take responsibility for your own actions. Don’t live in the past. Always go forward and look to the future.

    My mother at 44.

I  would like to honor my father for his love for his family. He was the hardest worker that I have ever known. He would get up early in the morning when the sun was rising, to meditate, and exercise. I want to thank him for his example of integrity and loyalty to his family and others. He has a heart of gold. Thank you, dad, for being there for me when I needed a lift of inspiration and for being my friend. You’re the greatest father a son could ever have. I salute you for who you are.

To my brothers and sisters for their support and friendship on my journey through life. Big Ed, for his boldness and courage in life. Don, for his sharpness and example for always improving. Brenda, for her love for life and sense of humor and always smiling and making us all laugh. Malinda, for her kind spirit and love for animals and people. Aaron, his devotion to his family and always wanting to help others. Justin, an angel of a brother, who loves everyone.

I would like to honor my own children. My oldest son, Spencer Dale II for the sweet spirit he has and the love he has for his two children: Spencer the third, and Deserae.

My daughter, Vanessa a free spirit. I think she is like that because of her name, which means butterfly. She is always studying about natural healing and sharing her knowledge with others. And my youngest son, Daniel, the smartest boy I have ever known. He loves life and others and makes friends easily. His gentle magnetism is powerful. I salute my children for who they are. And I want them to know that I love them and I learn from each of them.

I would like to thank my editor, Kathy Wilson for taking the time to edit my book and for her advice to make this book possible. Thank you so much.

    My Journey Growing Up

    My Mother the Herb Doctor

My mother was an incredible woman who believed in natural alternatives to good health and devoted her life to doing her best for her children. I remember joining her to watch physical fitness guru Jack LaLanne on TV, when I was just a little child. Jack seemed to have an inexhaustible reserve of incredible energy and enthusiasm about life and health. I would join my mom in doing some of the exercises on his program. He has such a naturally strong physique. What you eat is what you are, he would say, and as a young boy, I believed him.

My mother started searching for health alternative early in her life. She was diagnosed with diabetes at age 29. She didn’t agree with everything the medical people told her about health. She felt something was missing; so she went to a naturopathic doctor in Mesa, Arizona, for alternative methods of healing. When she walked into the naturopath’s office, he sat her down and looked into her eyes. My mother started to tell him about her condition, but before she could, he told her that her pancreas needed help and that she had diabetes. My mom was amazed that he already knew her diagnosis, and told him so.

He explained that he had used iridology to ascertain her condition. Iridology is a method of reading the markings in the iris to discover what is going on in the body. The naturopath put my mom on a diet of whole foods and fresh juices, recommending a Champion Juicer. She started to juice every day, using carrot juice, apple juice, and growing her own wheatgrass.

At about this time, the famous Dr. Ann Wigmore came to Mesa to lecture on wheatgrass, explaining how to grow and juice your own. My mother was excited about taking this step, and within a short time started to feel better and enjoy more energy. Amazingly, she was able to control her sugar level without medication. My mother would share her fresh juice with me, and I enjoyed helping her make the juice, as well. The wheatgrass was a little too strong for me by itself, so my mom would mix fresh apple juice in it.

When I got sick, my mother would give me herbs and tea to help me to feel better. For example, if I had a cold and stuffy nose, she would give me red raspberry tea and in a day or two, I’d be symptom free. At one time, I was diagnosed with worms and parasites, and my mom, the herb doctor, gave me some fresh minced garlic mixed with honey. After a couple of weeks, we went to the doctor, and the test came back negative, with no sign of those little critters.

During those days, it was difficult to find encapsulated herbs, so we would make our own. We went to the health food store and bought the powdered herbs, capsules, and a capsule tray. It may seem like a lot of work nowadays, when we have state-of-the-art encapsulating machines, but back then it seemed like a lot of fun.

    Changing My Life

Unfortunately, over the years, when I left home and ventured out into the world, like most young people, I strayed from my mother’s good teaching. As it turned out, I was living on hamburgers and drinking a six-pack of Pepsi a day. I gained weight, didn’t have much energy, and I suffered from severe allergies. Which were so bad that my eyes would nearly close shut from the itching and swelling, and I’d sneeze every couple of minutes. I had trouble sleeping and my lower back would ache constantly. It was clear that I was suffering from my lifestyle. I began to think back to when I was growing up, when my mother would feed me live whole foods, herbs and very little meat.

At that time I was only 32 years old, but I felt like I was 62. It finally caught up with me and my body was crying out for help! It was time I made some changes, and I did just that!

I phoned my dad and asked him if he still had mom’s health books. He said to come on over and use whatever I could find. When I started looking through the shelves, the first book seemed to jump out at me: Be Your Own Doctor by Ann Wigmore. In addition, my dad gave me a tape on wheat grass. I rushed home to listen to it and devoured the book on wheat grass. It was exciting to read how wheat grass can do so many things to heal the body.

    My Journey As An Herbalist

Reading Be Your Own Doctor was my very first step toward becoming an herbalist. It suddenly came back to me in full force, what I had learned as a child and young man, to cleanse and nourish my body with fresh juices, wheat grass, herbs, and yes, whole foods. It wasn’t long till I was totally free of my allergies and back to my normal weight again. My energy was back in town and I was feeling great!

In 1992 I started my own herb company, NuLife Herbs, Inc. I started with a wheat grass formula and a combination of other helpful herbs. I sold my herbal products to health food stores in the Phoenix area and began a weekly program on a health talk radio show with Dr. Gloria Poloro. I always noted the benefits of wheatgrass. I had a good time talking about health and how herbs can make a difference.

I realized that this was going to be my chosen path in life. Wanting to become a real expert, I went into a small health food store in Sun City, Arizona, looking for more information. I asked the owner of the store if she heard of Dr. Christopher, who was an herbalist who gave lectures and taught classes. My mother took his course when I was a young teenager.

Oh yes, she said with enthusiasm. I listened to several of his lectures when he was alive.

Do you know anything else about his herb school?

Follow me, she said simply. We went into her office and she pulled some information out of her desk drawer, including the phone number of the School of Natural Healing. Although Dr. Christopher has passed away, she told me, his son David was running the school. I called the school immediately and asked for David Christopher when the receptionist answered the phone. She said that he was busy at the moment, taking phone calls on his daily health questions, and that he would return my call.

When David returned my call, I told him that I had met his dad when I was fifteen years old, and I wanted to become an herbalist. I wanted to further my education, become more knowledgeable about herbs, to better my business, myself and help others.

David sent me the information on the school. When I received it, I called David again, asking if I could enroll. He had the first segment of the coursework sent right away. I got busy and worked on it. What a great time I had!

Every June, the School of Natural Healing offers its annual Master Herbalist classes.

I think you should come this year, David suggested, And not wait for the following year.

So I signed up for the Master Herbalist class. I got excited! June rolled around and I flew to Salt Lake City, Utah. A shuttle took us from the airport to a private home in Springville and a man came outside to greet us. He introduced himself as David Christopher. He showed us around the house and upstairs to the rooms. It was a beautiful home and had a good warm feeling about it. I felt at peace there. This was the famous Dr. Christopher’s home, where he lived when he was alive. I got goose bumps when David told us that was his father’s home. The room that I stayed in with three other students was Dr. Christopher’s own bedroom. I was going to be there for two weeks learning from the Master’s son himself.

When Monday morning came, we started school at 8:00 a.m. David Christopher started the class off with a silent moment of meditation, just as his dad would do before starting his classes. Then David told the story of his dad’s life and how herbal medicine had miraculously healed him. I can’t really tell you in words what I was feeling that day and over the rest of the two weeks. You would have to be there to experience it yourself. From the school I learned more than I can say, how herbs work, nutrition and natural healing.

The Man Who Transformed My Life

How did I first learn about Dr. Christopher? When I was growing up, my mother would attend every health lecture in town. Lynn Johnston, her iridologist, would hold a variety of lectures on many subjects, including iridology, vegetarianism, personology, and reflexology. I especially like reflexology, when we’d massage each other’s feet. By the time we got to the end of class, we were all relaxed and feeling wonderful.

One evening, Lynn Johnston introduced a special guest, Dr. Christopher, who was an herbalist, naturopath, and iridologist. Dr. Christopher healed many people with herbs and a diet of live foods. The doctor stood up and told the story of how he started in natural healing.

He was an orphan, who was adopted by a wonderful family. He was born with rheumatoid arthritis and confined to a wheelchair. The doctors said that he would never walk and that he wouldn’t live past thirty years old. Like most kids, I was daydreaming as he started talking, but soon he got my interest. I started thinking how wonderful it would be for me to be an herbalist and to help people improve their health. I absorbed it all, from cleansing your system with herbs to building your immune system. Dr. Christopher said that if your bloodstream was clean and pure, no disease could take place.

It all started to make sense, or at least I thought it did. After all, I was only 15 years old at the time and I hadn’t had any training with this natural stuff, just what my mother taught me and the herbs she would give me when I was sick. When the doctor retold stories about healing his patients, I became excited. He made it sound like it was easy to get rid of an illness or disease, if you used the right herbs.

Right in the middle of his lecture, he said, Oh, it’s time to take my heart medicine, excuse me. Everyone was curious to see what he was going to take! He took out a spoon and a tin can with cayenne pepper. He filled the teaspoon, and chugged it down, chasing it with distilled water. He then talked about the healing powers of cayenne pepper. He had some interesting stories about this red pepper, including the information that cayenne was excellent for the heart.

For example, one evening after lecturing, while he was at a hotel, a man started to have a heart attack. Dr. Christopher ordered a boy who was working there to go and get some warm water. When the boy returned, the doctor added a teaspoon of cayenne to the water and gave it to the heart attack patient. Within a few seconds, the man got up and started to walk around, feeling fine. By the time the medic came, he was back to normal. What a miracle!

After the lecture, I was very excited.
