The Little Book of Change - Yuri Chuba
All the principles you will read in this book are things that I’m actively trying to apply in my life. My goal in writing this book was not to provide solutions, but rather to present ideas. However, If anything you read is helpful in dealing with any of your problems, I would consider that a positive outcome.
Please do not take anything here as dogma. As you go through it, actively question what you are reading. I expect that there will be some things you will disagree with. In fact, I wouldn't want it any other way. But as you disagree, try to formulate the concept in your mind that you think is correct and see if you can provide a logical defence of it.
This book, at its core, is a collection of thoughts. These thoughts didn’t all come up at the same time and are not always related, which is why it doesn’t flow like a story with a beginning, middle and end. Think of it as a bridge between my mind and yours; a conversation between you and me.
I’m not sure if I will always have these views or if they will change with time, but at the moment this is my perspective and these are the ideals I wish to live by. I hope you will benefit from reading them.
Perfection
It’s not possible to be perfect. The reality is perfect
doesn’t exist. There is no universal gold standard for you to reach. Though there are many idealisms that people share, there are also many that they don’t. In other words, there is no objective way a person should be. Objectively, we cannot say a person should say this or do this or be this. The burden of perfection that is on so many of us is self-inflicted. If we want to be free of this pressure we have to allow ourselves to let go of our misguided belief in the unattainable. A human being has limitations in everything. Your skin cannot be completely clear, there are dumbbells you cannot lift, there is a weight you cannot attain and your hair can only grow so long. An objective perfection
only exists in our heads as an imaginary concept. In reality, perfection
is subjective. When a person says this is perfect
they are talking about something that is exceptionally pleasing to them; something that aligns with their perception of what they think that thing should be. For that reason, perfect
should not be something that you would damage your mind and body to attain, rather perfect
should be what you aspire to that uplifts you and the people around you. Perfect
is when you are living a life that takes into consideration what is best for you and for others. Even when you make mistakes, as you inevitably will, you continue on with this view in mind. This is perfection
.
Materialism
Children love toys . Anything shiny and new instantly grabs their attention. But in a short period of time that fun plaything is no longer interesting. It's forgotten about and the child then looks for the next exciting thing.
If you think about the toys you enjoyed playing with when you were younger, the chances are that you no longer find the same level of enjoyment from playing with such toys. It's most likely that you don't play with them at all.
In this way, children and adults are alike. Adults love toys too. The only difference is that adults play with bigger toys. As human beings, we never seem to lose the desire to pursue satisfaction in objects. It's
