Introduction
A True Story...
Maxine’s little girl seems so clever, and the kindy teachers said that she’s ready to start school now. But she’s only 4! I think that my daughter, Tayla, would struggle to do the puzzles that Maxine can do, and Tayla’s turned six already.
I couldn’t believe the things I saw her doing when I went over for a visit the other day. Her mum, Jackie, says that it’s probably because she copies her older brother, but I know that Jackie spends time with her. She’s often playing games with her and showing her how to do things. If only I’d spent more time with Tayla when she was really little, maybe that would have made a difference. I’ve been so focused on work, though. I just haven’t had the time.
Jackie has said that she doesn’t really push Maxine to learn but teaches her things incidentally while they’re playing together. I do often hear her explaining things to Maxine, and I guess she makes the most of every opportunity – even when she’s bathing her.
I don’t want Tayla to struggle at school, but she already seems to be having some trouble. I guess I could have made more effort when she was younger and tried to teach her more things. According to Jackie, a few minutes here and there each day can make a difference. It’s obvious that Maxine will be ready for school when she starts. She knows so much already!
I hope that Tayla doesn’t fall further behind because school won’t be much fun if she’s struggling.
By providing early learning opportunities for your child, you’re setting them up for much more success at school.
From birth to age eight and especially from birth to age three, is a critical time in baby brain development. This is an optimum time for children to learn, and as parents, it is our responsibility to give our children early learning opportunities.
By stimulating them from a young age in a fun and relaxed manner, we can take advantage of this period of incredible brain development where optimal early learning can take place and give our children a huge head start for school. It is a case of "Use it, or Lose it!" As well as being an optimum time to encourage early learning, we can help develop a positive attitude towards learning at a young age.
