A Surprise Party
()
About this ebook
On a mysterious and far away island, strange things are happening. With no people in sight, a wonderful collection of talking animals are having extraordinary, funny adventures. We have returned to the Island of Animaux, a land that somehow continues to change its position on the planet each day, to prevent it being found by humans. Perhaps this is the ancient and lost world of Atlantis!
The five new tales in A Surprise Party link seamlessly to the ones in the last book, Monsieur Le Chef. Once again that foul fowl Aubrey the Turkey is up to no good, although as usual his naughtiness only rebounds on himself. See the old bird try to host a wonderful party but forget to invite any guests. Watch as Walli Hog and Clifford Platypus take care of him after poor Aubrey becomes very ill, a kindness that he repays by selling their bedroom curtains! Shiver as the evil Rick Rat persuades three witches to put a curse on the turkey. And then see Aubrey do something incredible that no one, not even himself, could have imagined. Once again, stories packed with fun, silliness, naughty behaviour and happy endings.
Please enjoy the stories. And don’t be afraid to laugh, particularly as Aubrey’s expense. But please, please, please – continue to remember to keep the latest position of the island top secret!

HOW TO FIND THE LOCATION OF THE ISLAND OF ANIMAUX
Using Google Maps type the island location, included at the start of each story, into the search field (for example, 13N 90W – remember to put a space between the two coordinates). When you click the search button you will be taken to the relevant place on the map. Zoom out until you can see what part of the world Animaux is close to. In this case, off El Salvador. But be quick, as the island is moving all the time!

Scene One – Red Letter Day
Today’s the day!
gobbled Aubrey happily as he looked at the calendar that was nailed to the kitchen wall.
He had put a big red circle around today’s date seven days before, when Wincot had triumphed over Brusdor in the Animaux Cup Final. Since then, Aubrey had been getting more and more excited as the special day drew closer.
And now it had arrived, there was so much to do. Where should he start? Should he tidy the front room? Should he do the shopping? Should he cut the grass? Should he preen himself in front of the bathroom mirror? Should he sit in his armchair, with a silly look on his face and staring into space? Yes, the last one seemed like a very good idea, so he decided to do that straight away.
Aubrey walked from the kitchen to the front room. As he settled into his armchair, assuming the funny look, Clifford came down the stairs.
G’day, Aubs, how’s life?
Just wonderful – couldn’t be better,
said Aubrey with a jolly tone, continuing to stare at nothing in particular with the funny expression still on his face.
What’s wrong, Aubs?
asked Clifford, looking at him with concern. Have you got a problem with your eyes? Do you need to go to the optician, or something?
The optician? No, my eyesight is fine. Why do you ask?
replied the turkey.
I thought you had developed a squint, mate. I wished you good morning just now and you didn’t look at me when you answered. There could be a number of reasons. First, you were being a little bit rude. That’s probably the likeliest reason. Second, you have been sleep-walking and are still in a trance. That’s an interesting possibility, although perhaps the most far-fetched. Third, during the night your eyeballs rotated in their sockets and you can now see sideways. That’s the daftest possibility, but I think it’s also the funniest. And so that’s why I asked about the optician.
Aubrey turned and faced the platypus. Clifford, sometimes you think too much. Your imagination runs away with you and you end up saying strange things. Your comment about my eyeballs rotating was particularly unpleasant.
Point taken, Aubs. But can I ask why you were staring out of the window? What were you thinking about?
I was thinking about what I have to do first,
Aubrey said vaguely.
You’ve lost me, Aubs,
said Clifford, scratching his head with his flipper. I’m not following you at all.
What I need to do first for my surprise party,
replied Aubrey.
Party? Are you going to have a party?
Yes. Later today. It’s to celebrate us winning the cup last week. Oh, Clifford, don’t you remember?
Of course I remember winning the cup. That was a great afternoon. But it’s the first time you’ve mentioned a party,
said Clifford. But no worries. I love parties. Ripper! What time is it due to start?
Two o’clock this afternoon. But time is marching on, my friend from Down Under. There’s lots to do, so we can’t afford to lose another moment.
Just then Walli came out from the cupboard under the stairs. She had been in there since 6am, having got up much earlier than Aubrey or Clifford. Walli had been having a wonderful time, snuffling and snorting in all the dust and the cobwebs. She’d also found a strange grape-sized, squashy oval of black stuff in one of the corners. Walli wasn’t sure what it was but had a quick lick before losing interest, noticing that it had a waxy and slightly sour taste.
Howzit, have I missed something?
she asked her two friends.
Aubs is going to have a party,
quackled Clifford.
Ooooh, lovely,
squealed Walli. I haven’t been to a party for ages. What’s the theme?
Theme? What do you mean?
said Aubrey. He was not an expert at throwing parties, and was
