    THE CHARACTERS IN OUR STORY

    CHAPTER 1

    Critterville, USA: Every state has one. That’s if they are fortunate to possess a vast area of trees. Many people refer to them as forests. If you can spare the time to take in the beauty of a forest with its wondrous forms of trees and leaves, you, also, will experience the peace and tranquility, which is shared among the critters, dwelling in the forest.

    As the dewdrops kiss each tender leaf and the sun makes its appearance through hundreds of twisted limbs and branches, together they form illuminating prisms, glistening like thousands of diamonds. A sight to-behold! There are nature paths and trails formed by animals and adventurers. Several lead to nowhere in particular, but the one I recall goes deep into the wild woods.

    Nestled deep in the wild woods is an old, but well maintained, brown church, inviting those who seek a better way of life. Won’t you join me as we venture together? Which path shall we take? Come, please, walk with me. As we make our way down a narrow path you may see squirrels, a hen or two, even hear the sound of a woodpecker. An adventure filled with surprises!

    It was a beautiful sunny morning, and you could hear the birds chirping and singing softly. In a medium, red, adobe hut was a busy mother rabbit building a fire in her wood burning stove. Lucy had already started preparing the dough, for the pies she had promised to bake. She would bake three Huckleberry Pies and a Carrot Cake for the young’ns, for the church social. Lucy divided the dough into three equal parts and began rolling out the pie dough. Next, she set the pie plates in a row and placed the dough into each pie plate. Then she took a fork and made several piercing marks on the bottom of the pie plates. Lucy reached for the washed Huckleberries and added two and one-half cups of berries to each pie plate.
