The day that the Princess was born was a time of rejoicing. Her parents had been trying to have a baby for a long time and they – and the rest of the kingdom – had been starting to despair. There was just one problem. On the day that she was born, the Wise Woman who presided over all royal births, deaths and marriages made a mistake. She looked at the baby Princess and, even before she had been cleaned up and presented to the exhausted Queen and her somewhat over-excited husband, had declared that they had a Prince.
That their baby was a boy.
12On the day of her naming ceremony, the Princess was given many gifts. They ranged from a thoroughbred racehorse from the Duke of Chasterleigh, who was utterly appalling at gift-giving, to a ragged stuffed elephant from a little boy named Edgar who lived in a village beside the castle. It was named ‘Edgar’ in his honour.
