the girl
was a strawberry.
sweet,
bright,
warm,
ripe,
covered in seeds.
but the boy–
he chilled her.
dipped her in sugar
as if she wasn’t sweet enough
for his taste.
with you
i was an archaeologist
that found dirt
shaped like a bone
from which i sculpted
an enormous
one hundred foot skeleton.
drew scales,
eyes,
humanized it.
put it in textbooks
told others to read.
put it in a museum
told others to see.
how naive was i–
to create
a creature
that was backed by nothing.
that was shaped by dust.
i was once a fluid
cleaning
