ABOUT THE AUTHOR
PUBLICATIONS BY CAROLYN FRANKLIN M. A.
Yes, America IS the greatest and it couldn’t be without you, without me, without us. There’s no doubt about it, without me
and you
, we couldn’t be us
. We couldn’t be the Land of the Free, the richest, healthiest, happiest people ever.
But, today there’s a movement to make us all us
. Everyone the same, no standouts, no one excels at a talent, or a history. We are all being baked together like a macaroni casserole covered in manufactured, fake-flavor cheese - instant meal.
But, we’re not us
, and, we don’t want to be us
. I want you to be you, I insist on being me. You wouldn't want to be me (trust me!), no doubt you prefer to be you.
There seems to be a shove toward making us Americans all look alike, think alike, vote alike. Individualism is discouraged. Sameism, dullism, parrotism is encouraged. But, being myselfism or yourselfism is loudly discouraged.
Yes, in this magnificent country of waving grain from sea to shining sea, there’s an abundance of ignorance, of prejudice, of corruption. With the advent of other ideas, other cultures, other philosophies, we Americans are forced to re-think some of the inherited biases entrenched in our thinking as to right and wrong ways to accept each other.
The newer
cultures bring to the New World, a fresh perspective to our understanding of our past and the promise of a culturally richer and more fascinating America.
God bless America.
As a Communications Studies Instructor, I spent many years working with students, teaching them, explaining stuff - life - and helping them understand the validity and vitality of Self
- individualism, as well as the complex art of communication, which ain’t as easy as it seems - well, uh, actually - not easy at all.
The students and myself were fortunate to be in an elite school in Los Altos, Ca. Foothill College is set in an idyllic pastoral scene, grass-covered hills, serene flora, redwood trees and shade trees that line flower-bordered walk ways.
Occasionally I’d pass by a Tibetan student meditating in a patio graced by shafts of sun beams. Nearby the exotic Japanese Garden was cool, quiet, an inviting place for tea or studies.
Each student was an individual, with an exciting life of unique history, tradition, ideas, perspectives and personal experiences. A great opportunity for a student to learn and grow from, to experience a world of new ideas.
The creativity and resourcefulness within
