Acupuncture Points For Beginners - Ruth Glover
Introduction
Most of us have heard of acupuncture, but the truth is that, for many of us, that is the extent of our knowledge of acupuncture. We all know that it entails inserting needles into our bodies to help relieve pain. However, the mere mention of needles conjures up images of pain. This, however, is not the case.
Acupuncture is a type of traditional Chinese medicine. This medical practice framework is based on the belief that our bodies are a balance of two opposing yet inseparable forces – yin and yang.
According to the same logic, this holds true for the entire universe. Yin represents cold, slowness, and other passive forces, whereas Yang represents heat, excitement, and other active forces. Our mental and physical well-being is determined by a combination of these forces and their balance.
The concept of ‘chi' is another tenet of traditional Chinese medicine (pronounced chee). Chi is the universe's life force. The ‘chi' in the body is what creates and animates life. We are all born with a certain amount of chi, which we continue to acquire throughout our lives through food, air, water, and sunlight. Chi is thought to travel through our bodies in channels known as meridians. The quantity and quality of chi in our bodies is determined by our mental and physical balance (as represented by yin and yang).
In fact, yin and yang imbalances in the body block the channels through which chi travels in our bodies. In our body, there are twelve major meridians (channels through which chi – our vital energy – can travel), eight minor meridians, and over 2000 acupuncture points or acupoints that connect these meridians. Acupuncture unblocks these chi pathways, ensuring a continuous and free flow of energy through our bodies for mental and physical well-being.
There are some fundamental principles in Oriental medicine, but they are not set in stone. Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine in general are tailored and modified for each patient's specific needs. Furthermore, there are numerous schools of thought.
Traditional Chinese medicine is a comprehensive healthcare system that can provide both specialized and primary care. It also instructs us on how to avoid illness.
The majority of the roots of traditional Chinese medicine can be found in Taoism. Taoism is both a religion and a life philosophy. The natural laws of the universe and our relationship to the universe are central to Taoism.
Some of Taoism's fundamental principles are listed below. They must be understood in terms of their health and healing applications:
• The universe is governed by natural laws. We are a part of this universe, and we must exist within it and follow its laws.
• The universe is perfectly harmonious and perfectly organized in its natural order. Humans will be in harmony if they live according to the laws of the universe.
• The only constant is change. Our universe is constantly changing. Discord will reign if we do not change
