Forgiving What You Can't Forget: Discover How to Move On, Make Peace with Painful Memories, and Create a Life That’s Beautiful Again by Lysa TerKeurst: Conversation Starters

Bestselling author Lysa TerKeurst explores the dynamics of forgiveness and how she has given it to the same person who betrayed her love and trust–despite how hard and challenging it was to forgive him. In Forgiving What You Can’t Forget: Discover How to Move On, Make Peace with Painful Memories, and Create a Life That’s Beautiful Again, she teaches us how to liberate ourselves from unhealed pains from the past and move on resentment and bitterness.

A certified #1 New York Times bestseller upon debut, Publisher’s Weekly called Forgiving What You Can’t Forget an “excellent, revealing rumination” and gave it a starred review. It earned an almost perfect score of 4.8 out of 5 on Amazon, based on 11,727 global ratings, and is still ranked second in the website’s Christian Self Help, Emotional Self Help, and Christian Family & Relationships charts even after half a year since its release.

Introducing Forgiving What You Can’t Forget

Lysa TerKeurst divides Forgiving What You Can’t Forget: Discover How to Move On, Make Peace with Painful Memories, and Create a Life That’s Beautiful Again into fourteen chapters, with each teaching us lessons on forgiveness. She draws from her past experiences, particularly from her divorce a few years ago, and shares her triumph so that we, too, can finally forgive the people who wronged us.

Chapter 1: According to TerKeurst, forgiveness is a double-edged sword. Many emotions overwhelm us when we are betrayed by the persons we thought wouldn’t hurt us. We become cynical, bitter, and resentful as we develop trust issues even against innocent people. TerKeurst calls these feelings soldiers of unforgiveness which hinders our progress in the guise of protection and vindication for our suffering and pain. However, she wants us to understand that at the end of the day, not being able to forgive will lead us to isolation, to the emotional abyss of broken relationships, and to deferred spiritual healing. Forgiveness isn’t fueled by determination alone–the key to forgiving others requires commitment.

Chapter 2: Being hurt may be painful but we shouldn’t be afraid to open up. TerKeurst’s research on forgiveness revealed that what’s preventing us from forgiving are legitimate feelings. Whatever our reason may be, TerKeurst reiterates that pain is valid. But she also points out that no matter how much our heart has been shattered and how unrealistic forgiveness may seem, the act of forgiving someone should come to us sooner so that we wouldn’t regret it later on. She emphasizes the importance of God’s words written in the Bible, particularly Hebrews 8:12. But even those who couldn’t be swayed by Christian reference need to think about the consequences of unhealed pain: it would become unleashed hurt spewed out on others.

Chapter 3: Forgiveness is a complicated grace. When ignored, unrestrained chaos will come out from our unresolved pains, and before we know it, we’re also hurting other people. If left unaddressed, our pain will consume us and control the way we live our life.
