Chapter One: A Secret Revealed!
In the Southern Flower Valley town of Koe, Kaiba sits down on at a table in an open cafe. I was afraid you wouldn't agree to meet with me,
he said to an older lioness who joined him at the table.
I wouldn't miss meeting with my own son,
she replied.
It's been so many years,
said Kaiba, It's hard to know where to begin.
Okay, well,
said Sophia, Try telling me something I don't know about.
All right,
said Kaiba, I was there... the night Karthrix was born, I mean.
I still had the old house key,
he continued to explain, And I came back to grab some things from my old room that I needed to help me live on my own. So, I grabbed an old bag and began packing. I was on my way out when I saw the new nursery room set up out of the corner of my eye.
I knew it was dangerous for me to stay any longer than I already had, but part of me couldn't leave without seeing him.
And there he was: my little baby bro—not even a day old and fast asleep without a care in the world. I saw his bare shoulders and suddenly felt the sting of the marks on my own. It was then when I realized that, one day, he would be forced into getting identical marks on his own one day—like I was.
My thoughts rushed all at once, and I told myself that I couldn't leave him here. I had to take him; take him with me, and run away from this place. I reached for him but stopped when I thought about you and the fact that I was only just barely getting by and probably couldn't provide for a brand new baby- even if it was my baby brother.
So, I did the only thing I thought I could do and turned my back on it all. I traveled all night across the River Valley territories to get back to Aurora Mountain, where Petra was waiting for me. I told myself that everything would be fine—that you would always be there—and that I couldn't do anything to put a stop to it anyway. But I was wrong. I could have stopped it if I had only taken Karthrix with me that night, and none of this would be happening now.
I blame myself for all of this,
he said, finishing his tale with a sad sigh. You shouldn't, though,
Sophia replied.
Why not?
asked Kaiba.
Kaiba,
she replied, There was nothing you could have done differently. There was no way for you to foresee the future. And if you had tried to take Karth away, your father's supporters would have hunted you both down, and neither of you would be here today.
Sophia looked Kaiba in the eyes and said, If I got to choose to do it all over again, I would have taken you with me the first time I left the Northern River Valley, and I'm sorry I didn't. It was just at the time-
You don't have to explain,
said Kaiba, I know. I was there too, you know.
Sophia let out an exhaustive sigh, You know, no one teaches you how to be a parent.
I know,
said Kaiba. There's nothing anyone can do except try their best,
she said, I wish I could have been there when you needed me.
It's all in the past now,
said Kaiba, And all that matters now is what we do with the present we have and the future we work towards.
I suppose you're right,
Sophia said. So, what now?
asked Kaiba.
Now?
replied Sophia, Now, we plot and plan to get my youngest son back.
But how?
asked Kaiba, The Northern River Valley is crawling with allies loyal to dad.
Kaiba,
Sophia scolded, How do you think I'll do it? Do you think I've just been doing nothing all these years? Every ally your father has was once mine before he came on the scene. Even as we speak, there are allies who will help us put our family back together.
Who?
asked Kaiba. I cannot tell you. Not in this place with too many open ears walking about. But I can tell you that I would trust this lion with my very life. If anyone can get Karth home, it's him.

Chapter Two: Dawn of a Rainy Day
Today is a new day! This past spring, the Dragon Squad claimed their first victory against their rivals, the Lion Tribe Altri, but now, summer has arrived. The high heat and heavy rains slow our heroes down. Can they keep their spirits up as the weather bares down?
All right, squad members, listen up!
called Squadron Leader Costello, You did excellent work on your previous mission, but now's not the time to get an ego. Now is the time to train harder than you have ever trained in your lives. Through this archway and behind me are the training grounds where you will perfect and hone your skills until you all have become the greatest heroes of the most legendary Dragon Squad of all time!
Well, come on!
called out Chess as he jumped forward. He looked back towards his fellow squad members, We're never going to the best standing out here! So, you guys ready to become the best there ever was, or what?!
Chess, Grace, Jeff, Roy, and Marie would work on their physical training as the new Dragon Squad.
The newly formed Dragon Squad bounded for the entrance. Marie, the Labrador, Alli the alligator, Chess the Mustang, Jeff the giraffe, and Roy, the ferret marched through that entrance with all the confidence in the world.
And, then, they immediately discovered that all of that confidence was profoundly misplaced. Ah-hh, this sucks.
said Jeff as he hung upside down in a cargo net, This is all going to be much harder than we all originally planned, isn't it?
Yup.
replied Chess in a defeated sigh. And here I thought today would be easier,
said Jeff.
N-Nope.
