    CHAPTER ONE

It’s about three thirty, on a warm summer Saturday afternoon. Vanessa is at her home in East Hampton, New York. Her best friend Vikki decides to stop by the house. Vanessa answers the door she is not her usual fun-loving self.

Vikki notices that Vanessa is crying. Girl what’s wrong? Let’s go in the living room and talk about it.

Oh Vikki it’s nothing important, it’s just that I have PMS (Pre-Man Syndrome).

Wooo! Girl, please don’t scare me like that, the way you were crying and moping around here I thought that something was seriously wrong. By the way how is Tyrone doing?

Vanessa says sarcastically to Vikki, He is getting on my reserve nerve. I try to talk to him but he never has any time for me; and since he’s gotten more contracts he hardly spends any time at home. All he does is sleep and pee.

What! Now Vanessa you know you’re wrong, you should be glad that you have a man who is working and taking care of the home.

"Vikki, that’s the problem. He’s taking care of the home but he is forgetting about me, and he seems distant when I talk about adopting children. He thinks that his first child should not belong to a previous owner.

Have you ever heard of such nonsense?"

Vanessa, you need to be patient with Tyrone. He will eventually come around to the fact that adoption might be the only way to go for the two of you to have children. I’m going to trust and pray that GOD changes your situation around and that you will be able to have children naturally.

Vikki, maybe you’re right, but it will take a sho nuff miracle for him to change his mind. I’m almost scared to tell him that I want to go back to school and finish getting my degree; he is not going to go for it.

Vanessa, you need to tell Tyrone ‘to build a bridge and get over it’; you have to do what’s best for you.

Vikki, you try telling Tyrone that. He thinks I should be at home cooking and cleaning, and satisfying his needs.

Vanessa, I know what will get your mind off things.

    And what is that Vikki?

Let’s go shopping and spend some money.

Girl you ain’t said nothing but a word; give me a minute while I get dressed.

Vanessa girl, are you ready yet? Let’s go, I want to get to the stores before they run out of things.

I’m coming, give me a minute.

Vanessa, you have exactly one minute, fifty-nine seconds, fifty-eight, fifty-seven seconds! Girl you are the slowest.

Here I am girl, now you know when it comes to spending money, I’m the best at it. Let’s go so I can be back by the time Tyrone gets home from work.

Tyrone walks through the door and, as usual, expects his wife to be at his beck and call. Vanessa, Vanessa baby are you home? Where is that woman? She hasn’t been home lately and I don’t like it; we will have a discussion about this later.

Vanessa finally arrives at home, she is in a good mood because she has found a lot of nice things. Hi honey, how are you? How was your day at the office?

Tyrone is heated. I am fine! And my day was busy as usual. Never mind that, where were you?

I was shopping, duh!!! Do you think I have all these packages in my arms to look pretty?

Look woman, I don’t have time for your smart-ass answers; you’ve been out spending money on yourself again, and of course you didn’t think about me did you?

By the way Tyrone, I bought a couple of things for you too.

Honey I’m sorry, please forgive me. I’ve had a rough day at work, let me see what I got. Wow you got me the Rolex that I wanted; it’s not my birthday or anything like that. Okay what’s up?

What do you mean ‘what’s up?’ Can’t I do something nice for my man? Geez."

I don’t have a problem with you doing something nice for me, but I know you woman, Tyrone says with a smirk. One gift is something nice, but four gifts means you want something, or something is on your mind... so what is it?

Tyrone, that’s a shame that you would think I want something. Okay Vanessa, I’m going to ask you for the last time, ‘what is it’? Well I do want something. Well, umm how do I say this?

Will you just spit it out woman!

I want to go back to school to finish my degree and I want to work more hours. I can get a promotion at work, and I will be able to work on a full time basis, instead of part-time.

It’s out of the question, Vanessa.

What do you mean, ‘it’s out of the question? Tyrone, won’t you even hear me out?

I said no, and that’s the end of the conversation.

Tyrone, until you can give me a good reason why I can’t go back to school, I am going back to school.

Look woman I am your husband and I said you’re not going back. It is what it is. No school and no more hours, you should be happy that I am allowing you to work the hours that you are working now. Give it up, end of discussion. Vanessa is trying to get in the last word. Tyrone is ignoring her; he is answering his cell phone. Hello how are you doing today? Tyrone whoever that is; tell them they need to call you back so we can finish this conversation!

Excuse me for a moment. Vanessa can’t you see that I am on the phone, and for the last time we are not having this discussion. I said no and that’s my final answer; this conversation is over, end of discussion.

Tyrone Tyler, you make me so sick; this is ridiculous that you are acting so childish. I’m going upstairs. And for the record I am going to school. one way or another. Oh! I could kill you right now.

Vanessa calls Vikki, but when Vikki answers she barely recognizes Vanessa voice. Hello who is this?

Hey girl it’s only your best friend Vanessa, how are you?

Vanessa, it doesn’t sound like you at all. Are you okay? I can hear something strange in your voice, do you need me to come over there?

It’s Tyrone, can you believe that he said that he doesn’t want me to go back to school to finish my degree and he said that I can’t work longer hours.

What! Did you ask him why not? You need to press him on that. I don’t understand why he wouldn’t, in all the years I have known Tyrone, he seems like a pretty reasonable guy. Isn’t he the one who always talks about education? And now for him to tell you that you can’t go back to finish your degree, it just seems a little weird to me.

Girl I did ask him about it he said no; and just when I thought that he was going to give me a legitimate answer, he decided to take a call on his cell. I’m getting sick of him.

Girl calm down; here’s what I want you to do, get dressed and come over here so that we can talk rationally.

I can’t come over there now, there is no way that he is going to let me leave.

What! Is he your father? You’re a grown woman, girl I’ll be waiting. You know what, you are right! Who does he think he is? He is not my father! I will be there soon let me change my clothes. Vanessa is coming down stairs; she notices Tyrone in the living room on the couch snoring like a Cheshire cat, as usual. She realizes that this is a good time for her to leave so she tries and sneaks past him.

    Going somewhere, are we?

How in the hell did he hear or see me? I was quiet as a button. Yes, I was just going over to Vikki’s house!

You’re going to Vikki’s house for what, at this time of the night?

Just to talk, that’s all, nothing else.

I don’t think so, I’m hungry you haven’t cooked a thing and you want to go and chit chat with your girlfriend. Not tonight you won’t, and don’t make faces behind my back.

    Yes master butthole!

Vanessa, what did you call me?

Mumbling under her breathe she says, You really don’t want to know. Nothing darling, Tyrone you are getting on my last nerve, I can’t take it anymore...

Vikki, I had to call you.

Vanessa where are you? I have been waiting for over one hour for you; it only takes ten minutes to get from your house to my house.

Of course you know Tyrone won’t let me leave the house. I don’t know what I’m going to do anymore, I’m at wits end.

Maybe you guys need to go to counseling.

Wrong answer. Tyrone would never go for that, you really want problems for me. I will be divorced for sure. Well let me go. I just need to think right now, I don’t want to do the wrong thing, (ttyl) girl; and Vikki, before you ask ‘what a ttyl is,’ it means talk to you later. Love you girl, gotta go now.

Vanessa has changed into something more comfortable, she is about to come back downstairs to cook dinner for Tyrone. As she walks by he grabs her by the arm and pulls her close to him. In his deep apologetic voice, he says to his wife, Baby I am so sorry for talking to you in such a nasty manner. I have a lot going on at work, and of course I took it out on the person closest to me. And you know that you can hang out with Vikki anytime that you want.

It’s alright, I’m going to fix your dinner now. As she tries to pull away from him, Tyrone pulls her closer to him and kisses her.

She still isn’t happy. She is quiet at dinner and too scared to say anything to Tyrone, fearing he will go off on her again.

Baby is there something wrong? You are very quiet.

    Tyrone I’m okay.

Vanessa Tyler, we have been married long enough for me to know that there is something wrong, now what is it?

Trust me, there is nothing wrong. Everything will be alright.

Tyrone gets up from the table and walks over to Vanessa. He takes her by the hand and pulls her up. Baby, I want you to know that I love you so very much, and you can talk to me about anything.

Crying through her tears, she tells Tyrone, Well, I don’t think that I make you happy anymore, and I’m sorry that I haven’t been able to give you what you want. Tyrone I was thinking, maybe it would be a good idea if we separated for a while.

Woman, what in the world are you talking about? I was happy with you when I first married you, and I’m happy now, is this really what’s bothering you? What are you hiding from me? What do you mean you haven’t been able to give me what I want?

Tyrone, you know as well as I do that you want children, and I haven’t been able to give you any.

And so this is why you think we should separate? Now I’m really hurt.

Tyrone, I’m sorry, but I’m entitled to my feelings, and that’s what’s bothering me.

Tyrone is thinking to himself; deep down inside he does want children, but he wouldn’t dare tell Vanessa that this is the missing piece to true happiness in their marriage. Baby let’s not go there again with that, I’m okay with it, and who knows maybe one day things will change. In the meantime, I love you; and don’t worry about not having kids, everything will happen in God’s time. Now let’s go upstairs and go to sleep. I have to get up for work very early in the morning. Baby, I’m sorry I have to take this call. Go ahead I will meet you in our room in a minute.

Tyrone’s mistress in on the phone. Hey handsome, I just called to say good night and that I love you.

Tyrone can’t say I love you to Kayla on the phone because his wife is in the house with him, and he is afraid she might hear him. Okay thank you so much. He is trying to play it off. The meeting has been re-scheduled for eight o’clock tomorrow morning and not ten o’clock, okay thank you, and you have a good night as well.

    CHAPTER TWO

Good morning, how is my handsome husband doing? Tyrone, you are bright eyed and rearing to go this morning.

Vanessa, I can’t believe that you are up this early. Are you sick or something? Honey it’s nothing like that at all. The office asked me to come in a little earlier today I have a lot of work to do.

Well, what time are you getting home?

Tyrone I don’t know, I told you yesterday that the firm wants me to work more hours and I told them that I would; this could lead to full-time employment for me. I am really excited about working the extra hours. Well, you need to tell them that you can’t work longer hours because you need to be home taking care of the house."

Tyrone it’s too early in the morning, and I’m not having this discussion with you. I will be home late and that’s final.

Oh really Vanessa, we will see about that! I expect you home by six o’clock.

Oh really! I will talk to you later honey. I cannot and will not be late for work.

Vanessa I hope you heard what I said!

    Whatever Tyrone!

Vanessa please do not Whatever me. I mean six o’clock, or I will come to your office and escort you home personally. Vanessa I mean it, six o’clock sharp, not six o’clock and one second. Please don’t test me.

    "Good bye Tyrone, I am
