ABOUT THE AUTHOR
1
The frigid, biting air of February leaked through the open window as the school bus rumbled down the road. The children of Highland Falls Elementary school shivered in their seats as another school week reared its ugly head. Andy and Anna Saunders sat freezing in their seats, shooting harsh looks at Jayce who forgot to close his window after waving goodbye to his parents.
Jayce, why don’t you close that thing?
Maddie Jones demanded from her seat. It’s freezing in here!
Yeah, dude,
Anna said, huddling in her seat. Why did you put that thing down anyway? It’s mid-February!
Sorry!
Jayce Bell replied, hurrying to the window to clamp it shut. Sometimes I forget it’s like twenty degrees outside.
Jayce grabbed the metal frame and closed his window, cutting off the chill of the frozen world. Several sighs of relief sounded throughout the bus.
That’s because your parents bundle you up in like a zillion clothes,
Andy smiled.
Andy’s backpack wobbled on his seat, and an orange, scaly head popped out from an open compartment.
Hey, Tennyson, get back in there,
Andy told the baby velociraptor. You can’t come out until we get a break from our first class.
Yeah, dude,
Anna said, patting the raptor on the head. You know the rules. No one else can know you’re here. It’s bad enough that Mason Mitchell saw you back when the school year began.
Tennyson growled in boredom and slid back through the opening, disappearing once more from view.
He keeps trying to sneak out lately,
Andy remarked. That’s just what we’d need. Mrs. Jenkins will find him, call our parents, and then they’ll ground us until the sixth grade.
Andy and Anna looked around. Thankfully, the other children on the bus weren’t paying attention and failed to notice the little tiger-striped dinosaur sticking out of Andy’s backpack.
He must be excited for the Valentine’s party this Friday,
Maddie guessed, trying to keep warm by huddling inside her thick, red winter coat.
On Friday, the Highland Falls Elementary School would be throwing a Valentine’s Day party. Each classroom would have candy, exchange cards and small gifts, and watch a video. The kids were very excited; there hadn’t been a good classroom party since Christmas two months earlier.
It’ll be fantastic!
Jayce exclaimed. Last year in third grade we got all kinds of goodies!
Just don’t eat it all this year,
Anna joked. Save some for the rest of us, Jayce.
I’ll think about it,
Jayce smirked.
Are you going to sneak Tennyson into the party?
Maddie asked, turning to Anna and Andy.
I guess it depends if he behaves himself throughout the week,
Anna smiled. It’s not like dinosaurs can have chocolate anyway. But who knows, maybe he’ll like whatever movie Mrs. Jenkins brings in.
So, Andy, are you going to write a love letter to Emily Davis this year?
Maddie asked, blushing in her chair as the bus bounced down a wintry back road.
Andy rolled his eyes, grunted, and leaned back in his seat, staring awkwardly at the bus ceiling. He figured if he stared at the ceiling long enough, maybe his friends would change the subject. Unfortunately, when Anna decided to chime in, he knew it was far from over.
Yeah, bro,
she nudged him. "When are you going to make your move? We’ve all been waiting forever for you to do
