Introduction
My name is Laverne, and I’m eight years old. My mom named me after some old TV show. It’s a kind of a weird name, but I like it. The TV Laverne lives with her best friend and they get into all sorts of crazy situations. I get into zero crazy situations. Not even one. Not yet, anyway. But you know who does? My Grandmas.
First of all, I have a lot of Grandmas. I mean a lot. My dad’s parents got divorced and remarried, so he has a mom and a stepmom. That’s two Grandmas for me. Plus, my mom grew up with two moms instead of a mom and dad. Grandma Mae and Grandma Terry have been married to each other for over forty years. So I have four grandmas. My mom calls them my grandma gang.
It may sound confusing, but it’s really cool at Christmas and my birthday. Don’t worry—you don’t have to remember all those people. This book is only about two of them: Gammy and Grandma Terry.
When I was little, I couldn’t say Grandma Mae very well. I said gam-mae, and now everyone calls her Gammy. Gammy loves books and used to be a librarian. She walks with a cane.
Grandma Terry used to be a Girl Scout camp counselor and is really great at music and art. She always wears cargo pants with a lot of pockets to put things in. They live right down the street from me in a little house with four cats when they aren’t off on an adventure.
Gammy and Grandma Terry travel somewhere new every year. I feed their cats while they are gone. I can’t have a cat at home since my brother is allergic, but taking care of my Grandmas’ cats is almost as good. My grandmas have been to Africa, France, Cuba, and a bunch of other places too.
