Born happily in a barn in the country, the book tells the story of what happens to him when he and his sister Moet come to live at Riverside Park. This very beautiful town house complex and its inhabitants form the backdrop for all the adventures Chandon and his friends undergo.
You will meet Miss Rosie and Mischief who become very close to Chandon and help save his bacon on more than one occasion. Buttons and Orlando, personalities in their own right, take part in Chandon’s character building experiences. He is a most remarkable Cat and his is a fine story right enough.

Beginnings
How does every good story begin? You did say, Once upon a time
didn’t you? Yes. Correct. Once upon a time, there was a farm way out in the country where Mama and Papa Cat lived. On this particular morning Mama Cat was very busy licking and loving her new kittens. She had birthed them during the early hours of the morning while it was still dark. The moon was shining and the stars twinkled as each little furry bundle came into the world.
They were so tiny and beautiful. Each one a gentle, soft grey color with darker tiger markings just like their mother. Their eyes were tight shut. Little mewling sounds could be heard as they nestled close to feed. But wait a minute, one little kitten, the last to be born, was not quite right. Instead of a beautiful full tail, as long as himself with a pointy tip, he had a short stubby tail that did not suit him at all.
Oh my whiskers
said Mama Cat. What on earth has happened here? A cat without a proper tail, oh my whiskers whatever are we going to do?
She watched carefully as the little kitten pushed forward to feed. This poor little kitten is going to have to be very brave if he is to survive in the world today with only a stubby tail,
she sighed. Just then Papa Cat popped into the barn through the attic window. Good morning my dear,
he said and look very pleased when he saw the new kittens all cozy and warm beside their mother. I’ve managed to find a mouse or two for breakfast,
he added. And I see the farmer’s wife has put out fresh milk for you too.
Mama Cat looked at him and quietly mentioned there was a small matter needing to be discussed.
When he heard the news that one of the kittens was without a proper tail he was most distressed. He sat and started to lick and groom himself thoroughly. Mama Cat knew not to disturb him. This was the way Papa Cat made thinking time for himself.
Sometime later, Papa Cat went across to look at his new family while Mama Cat was having a little nap. Looking after six little bundles is busy work. Lots of licking and grooming and feeding to ensure each tiny bundle of fur got plenty of love and attention. Little bundles, paws and tails all mixed up curled into a bigger bundle nestled up with their mother and fast asleep. And yes, sure enough, little Stumpy tail was right in the middle all tucked up with his brothers and sisters. Not a care in the world, have you my boy,
Papa Cat whispered. Nothing to be done about a little stumpy tail. Life is going to be different for you. We will just have to wait and see how it all turns out,
he mused as he walked silently back up to the attic window. High up there he could keep a watchful eye over his family as Papa Cats do.
Stubby tail’s first adventure
The barn was alive and electric with activity. Six boisterous little kittens were up to mischief all over the place. Two were tied up in knots playing
