About this ebook
Book 4 in the Cats in the Mirror series.
Agent Onyx, also known as Slinky by her human family, was more than happy to spend her Earth-life hiding under beds and cuddling with her girl, Mindy. But when it's time for Mindy to go away to college, Slinky finds herself being moved to a strange new apartment, away from her sister and the comfort of her home. Just as Kimba is taking big steps toward being an agent in training and Slinky is adjusting to her new life, the timid black cat finds herself accidentally separated from Mindy. Can Kimba, Thoth, Special Agent Artemis, and the rest of the cats at headquarters find Slinky before she is lost on Earth forever?
Some cats are born on Earth and never know who they really are. Others are sent. They are undercover for their years on Earth. They know who they are. They know that they are not from Earth at all. And they are part of a bigger plan.

The characters and events in this book
are not based on real events.
Well, maybe a little bit.
But the names have been changed
to protect the innocent.
Sometimes.
All of the stories in this series are full of real events in the lives of our cats Kimba and Hiro. You will find photos of them at the end of many chapters, as well as photos of other cats and events that sparked my imagination.
Of course, Kimba and Hiro don’t really talk to alien cats in our bathroom mirror, nor do they visit ships in space. Not that I’ve ever seen. Maybe they are just tricky.
You never know with cats.
Some cats are born on Earth
and never know who they really are.
Others are sent.
They are undercover for their years on Earth.
They know who they are.
They know that they are not from Earth at all.
And they are part of a bigger plan.
SO FAR IN THE SERIES
Starting with Book Four in any series is a bad idea. Go back and read the first three books if you really want to enjoy this one. For those of you determined to start here, or in case you read the first three books a while ago and need a reminder, here are some details you should know.
All cats (wild and tame) are aliens from a planet that is so far away they live on spaceships all over the universe instead of going back. They have plans for a complete takeover of Earth—when the time is right.
Most of the cats on Earth do not know where they came from anymore. The old stories have been lost. They don’t know they are aliens and are quite happy being pets. Some are just wild or lost or stray.
Specially trained agent cats from the ships spend time on Earth. They pretend to be regular cats, but they are not.
Agent cats communicate with the ship and each other through reflective devices. Mirrors are the best and most common ways to communicate.
Ship cats live for hundreds of Earth years. An Earth-life is just a fraction of that. When an agent dies on Earth, his or her being is transferred back to the ship. Agents rarely return to Earth more than nine times.
The two main characters in this series, Kimba and Hiro, are sisters and littermates who were accidentally born on Earth. Their mother is the high commander of all the cat ships in the known universes. It is their destiny to follow in her paw prints as the highest-ranking cats. A human (Daddy) found them and took them in before they could return to the ship.
Once Kimba and Hiro learned who they really are, they started training for their future as alien cat leaders. They travel back and forth between their Earth home and the cat spaceship headquarters.
Special Agent Artemis is the main contact on the ship, who watches over the two royal daughters and ensures their safety on Earth.
Hiro is not that interested in her ship life. She loves her human Daddy too much. She just hopes to be on the High Council one day.
Kimba has already begun training to be an agent with the help of Special Agent Medusa Gloriosa, who is also currently living on Earth.
Two other agent cats live in the Earth house with Kimba and Hiro. Agent Ebony is known as Miss Fatty Cat by the humans. Her youngest sister, Agent Onyx, is known as Slinky. In their Earth-lives, they are the pets of the daughters in the house. Miss Fatty Cat is rather lazy and loves Leia’s attention. Slinky is terrified of everything and rarely leaves Mindy’s room.
Life on the ships is highly organized. All kittens follow in their parents’ profession in an orderly system that has continued for millions of years. Long-term contact with the democratic process on Earth has stirred up resistance to this system. A group of rebels, the League For Cat Equality, is fighting the established system.
Agent Ebony (Miss Fatty Cat) is believed to have helped the rebels kidnap Kimba in order to force the high commander to listen to their new ideas, but no proof of her help could be found. Miss Fatty Cat had her own motives and jealousies, but she came to regret being involved at all.
Kimba was saved from her kidnappers by Transfer Technician in Training Thoth and her uncle, Special Agent Buddy. Another transfer technician named Snowball was captured and blamed for the plot against Kimba.
Kimba and Hiro have now settled into their Earth-lives and routine and are enjoying being well-loved pets. For now.
Photo of Slinky as a kitten, hiding under a table and looking wary.Slinky was a very timid cat. She has not had much to say besides Eeep
in the series so far. That’s all about to change. Time to step out, Slinky!
CHAPTER 1
MOVING BOXES
Slinky watched in horror as Mindy pulled the clear packing tape across the top of yet another big cardboard box. The piercing sound of the tape was bad enough, but the reality of what packed boxes meant was even worse.
They were moving. Again.
Should we take Mufasa?
the girl asked her cat, wrapping her arms around the giant stuffed toy. It seems a shame to leave him behind.
You wanted to take him on trips with us when you were little,
Mama said as she wandered into the room.
She set a basket of clean laundry down on the bed, careful to stay just far enough away from Slinky not to startle her. It was easy to startle Slinky, and her eyes were wide today.
I remember wanting to take him.
Mindy smiled. I pretended that Mufasa was running along the ground under the airplane so he could be in Florida with us at Grandpa’s house.
Mama nodded and picked a book from the shelf.
Are you going to leave most of these here?
she asked.
I think so. I can always come get them if I need them, but I think the assignments will keep me busy enough.
Okay.
Mama shrugged. Dinner’s almost ready.
She started to leave, but then she hesitated in the doorway.
Are you really sure you want to take Slinky with you? I know it’s allowed in the apartment, but I’m just worried that she will be scared and lonely with you gone so much of the day.
Mindy set the packing tape down. Both of them looked at Slinky, crouching nervously on the bed. She stared back at them with bright-yellow eyes.
Don’t you think she’d miss me even more if I left her here?
I suppose so.
Mama nodded and headed upstairs to finish making dinner.
What do you think, Slinks?
Mindy said. Are you ready for college?
Slinky blinked twice, but she didn’t know what to say. She didn’t know what college was. But she did know that she didn’t want Mindy to go anywhere without her. She hopped up on a nearby box and meowed sweetly. Her girl scratched the top of her head and right behind her ears.
I’m not sure I’m ready either,
Mindy admitted. But we can face it together.
From on top of a box in the game room, Kimba twitched her ears.
College? What’s college? she wondered. Whatever it was, there were moving boxes involved. Headquarters needed to know about it.
That afternoon, when the house was empty of humans, Kimba hopped up on the bathroom sink in her usual place. She stared into the mirror expectantly.
Greetings,
she said.
For a moment, there was silence, and then an image crackled in the mirror and Special Agent Artemis, her old friend, appeared.
Greetings, Kimba,
he said, wiping a paw across his mouth. Excuse me. You caught me at breakfast.
My apologies,
she said but knew it wasn’t really necessary. Agents answered calls at every hour of the day and night without complaint. It was part of the job.
Is something wrong?
Artemis asked.
I’m not sure,
she admitted. They are packing boxes downstairs.
Is the family moving again?
he asked, suddenly more alert and expectant.
I don’t think so. No one else is packing anywhere else. Just Mindy. I listened in from the game room and heard her talking to Mama about ‘college.’ Do you know what that is?
Artemis relaxed and sat back in his seat.
Ah, yes. College. It is like the advanced training we receive here on the ship.
Is it dangerous?
No, no,
he laughed, not at all. Mindy will continue her schooling away from home. That is all. She is entering the adult human experience.
I see,
Kimba said, still not quite sure.
Did they say where she would be living? In a dorm room, perhaps?
No, they called it an apartment. And it sounds like Slinky is going with her.
That bit of information got his attention, and he began to rapidly click around on his computer.
Agent Onyx, yes,
he said, still looking off at another part of the screen. I had quite forgotten she was in the house with you.
That’s easy to do. All she does is hide in Mindy’s room.
Well, she is a timid soul,
he admitted. The high commander was hesitant to send her to Earth at all, but her work as an agent had to begin sometime. Going with her sister seemed a good fit. Does Agent Ebony, your Miss Fatty Cat, know about this development?
"I don’t think so. I wanted to talk with you first and find out what was really going
