    Chapter One

    The Potter’s Process

    Understanding the Potter’s Pattern

So, I went down to the potter’s house and saw him working with clay at the wheel. He was making a pot from clay. But there was something wrong with the pot. So, the potter used that clay to make another pot. With his hands, he shaped the pot the way he wanted it to be. Then this message from the LORD came to me: "Family of Israel, you know that I can do the same thing with you. You are like the clay in the potter’s hands, and I am the Potter." This message is from the LORD. - Jeremiah 18: 3-6 ESV

Every single human placed upon this earth is unique. Even identical twins are not truly identical; they share the same DNA, but the DNA is not identical - environmental and other factors plays a part in their differences.

From a scientific point of view, if we were indistinguishable as human beings, we would have the same genes in our chromosomes and the same identity. Our Lord God is the true Master Potter. All His creation is filled with intricate, intelligent design which speaks of His brilliance. His designs are masterpieces – distinctive, and specific, filled with characteristics that shape their pattern.

In every nation, in every language and in every domain, the pattern of the Potter is seen from one generation to another. There is a seal of authenticity and originality through each pattern He makes. Despite the diversity of people, from form to frame, the originality of each pattern is never compromised; this shows the integrity of our God.

One of the commonly asked questions amongst atheists, people who do not know where they stand in their beliefs, and subconsciously some Christians is, Why can’t God make us alike? Why can’t God condition our lives to align with His will? By conducting a simple test on ourselves, we should be able to answer these questions. Let’s imagine the only food available to eat is beans; only God knows how many of us would survive! The poor diet and lack of variety would eventually result in ill health conditions, ailments and diseases. We would be weaker, and susceptible to the same health conditions and ailments.

I have realised, people who ask ephemeral questions often view life through a limited perspective or are trying to avoid taking responsibility. Paul, giving thought to the wisdom of God says in Romans 11:33, Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!

The wisdom we express is sometimes limited; we only see where we are and where we are coming from - even the future we profess to see is a matter of hope and faith in the promises of God. The wisdom of our God spans eternity. This is why Solomon tells us, He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end. (Ecclesiastes 3:11) In its simplest form, the variety of food we eat, the clothes we wear, and the places we go tell us so much about the pleasure we get from variety. As some happily say – variety is the spice of life.

Our God also takes pleasure in the variety and diversity of people; this is why even at creation the Bible tells us:

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth. - Genesis 1:27-28

This passage sheds light on the earlier question; without diversity, procreation would have been impossible, and it would have been difficult for the word of God to be fulfilled in terms of multiplication and dominion. Also, the image and likeness of God we have, as mentioned in Genesis, is the spiritual image and likeness not the form and shape of the body. Even our souls have to be nurtured to conform to that of Christ. This is why Elihu explained in Job 33:4 saying, The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.

What makes us like God is the spirit of God and the breath of God inside of us. The diversity of our soul and body is necessary for survival in our environment; it is required to fight against disease, and to fulfil the purpose for which we have been created. Irrespective of how diversified the pattern created by the Potter, there is a glory attached and a plan for every pattern. Paul explained certain truths to the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 15:39-40, referring to the diversity of God’s pattern:

All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds. There are also celestial bodies, and terrestrial bodies: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. - 1 Corinthians 15:39-40
