    Book Overview

    Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead is a book by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. Sandberg, in a first-person perspective, relates her personal path from her days as a young student to her current status as a woman in a position of power.

    To illustrate this she tells anecdotes that have taught her important lessons, starting with the story of her willful grandmother and mother, who set examples for both her and her brother. She reflects on the evolution of women’s rights in the past decades and how advancement towards equality is still halted by gender stereotypes and sociocultural prejudices.

    Sandberg believes that the key to a future of gender equality lies in more women rising to more positions of high responsibility and power in government and all sectors of industry. For this to happen, there need to be certain changes. One of these changes is that women must be less afraid and believe more in themselves, shedding the negative conception of a strong-willed and ambitious woman. Women must also have more options and be prepared to take risks. At present, it seems that working women are expected to ultimately choose between a fulfilling career or raising a family. It should not be that way, according to Sandberg. She
