THE POWER OF SISTERHOOD

When superstar Taylor Swift told Vanity Fair that “there’s aspecial place in hell for women who aren’t supportive of other women!”, she was hitting back at comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for joking about her love life. But, the quote, originally attributed to US diplomat Madeleine Albright, crops up constantly because it strikes a chord for every woman who understands the power of sisterhood – women supporting others.

This is a power that black South African women, particularly, have long recognised, as they battle the double burden of apartheid-entrenched race discrimination plus that of discrimination on the grounds of their gender.
