In The Name of God Is Mercy, Vatican reporter Andrea Tornielli explores this concept via an extended interview with Pope Francis, elaborating on the notion of mercy through the pope’s eyes, as both man and priest.
For Pope Francis, mercy is the central tenet of God’s teaching. In 2013, during his second homily as pope, he said, The message of Jesus is mercy. For me, and I say this with humility, it is the Lord’s strongest message.
According to Pope Francis, recognizing oneself as a sinner is essential to knowing God’s mercy, which is an expression of His love. If people believe they have no cause for repentance, they cannot experience the Lord’s forgiveness. Pope Francis humbly—and candidly—implicates himself as a sinner, too: All human beings are sinners in the eyes of God. He also recalls the earliest act of confession, demonstrated in the Bible when Jesus saves an adulteress from being stoned by asking those without sin to cast the first stone, then offering the woman a chance to confess her sins as if she were speaking to God, through him.
