CHAPTER 1
Designed to Carry Light
Ouch! That’s my foot!
cried the little candle.
Oh! I am sorry,
replied Flicker to his little sister, Flame. You would think that I would be able to get around a little better in the dark by now. I am thirteen.
Flicker and Flame were two of the many candles that called Candlestick City their home. In this special city, there were short and tall candles, fat and skinny candles, old and young candles; candles of all shapes, colors, and sizes. Each was different from the others but they were all the same in this: They were all designed to carry light…but didn’t. Darkness covered their city!
The only light Flicker and Flame had ever seen came streaming from the Light-giver on his daily visits. This large, beautiful, almost transparent candle was the creator of them all but the candles were afraid of him.
He’s so bright! Surely the heat from his light will destroy us,
said little Flame.
Yeah, and I heard that his dad is really mean and wants his own way all the time.
Oh, how awful….but he doesn’t look like a mean candle.
The Light-giver visited Candlestick City every day, offering to light the wicks of the dark candles, but each time they refused. Darkness was all these candles had ever known.
Stay in the dark, little candles,
was the warning they had received from Mother. It is safer here. Besides, we are all together in this wonderful darkness.
Mother’s warning was sincere, yet there was something little Flame saw in the Light-giver’s eyes every time he looked at her. It seemed like they were sparkling and dancing at the same time. And when he spoke, his words were soothing and gentle. How could it possibly be true what the other candles said about
