Deep Star and Hidden Terror - Lisa Anderson
·
Intro:
Terra was sitting in the ‘Goldilocks zone’ of
Her home solar system when it happened.
A small white dwarf rouge star passed
Through the Terran system.
Just a push from the gravity.
A push in the wrong direction.
Chapter 1:
The sky was clear and perfect for star gazing. For others it would have been a hobby, for this couple it was more than that. The trees were far enough away to not obstruct the view. The spot was perfect, almost as if had grown for this very reason. The ground was flat enough to set up the equipment and the view was always wonderful. While the galaxy was a spiral this spot seem to always have the best view. It was their favorite spot to have a nice view of the skies and stars for as far as the eye could see. The two star gazers were looking at their star charting applications and up at the night sky. Something was wrong. They couldn’t figure out why. There was no reason that it should have happened, but it seemed to have happened. The stars didn’t seem to have moved. They normally do a tiny bit every night. The two people were tracking the stars as part of their jobs. It was common with the rotation of the planet as well as the movement in reference to it’s orbit to the sun. Dante' are you seeing this? It doesn’t make sense.
The young woman asked.
This doesn’t make sense... Kira ... the stars are wrong. I see it but it doesn’t make sense. With the rotation of Terra they should have moved a tiny bit. What would cause it? Why? Are you seeing the same thing?
Dante' said. I also am seeing a new star... or something that is not making sense to me. There is no way that what I am seeing could just appear overnight.
Kira’s jet black hair spun. A new star? There is no way that it would just appear overnight. Dante’ would often make jokes like that but this was something that is a bit more important than the time to joke around. She thought her husband was trying to be funny, but he was looking at the equipment. His brow was furrowed in concentration as if he was trying to figure something out. He was using a modified app and telescope. Telling he was concerned, she jumped off the vehicle and went over to him. What do you mean a new star? They don’t just appear overnight. We should have had some warning. Was there a gas cloud where it is to where it would have formed?
Check this out.
Dante’ said and moved to where Kira could look through the scope. He could tell that this wasn’t adding up to his wife. There was no gas cloud, no reason for it to be there. That was empty space less than a day ago.
Curiouser and curiouser... What is that? It looks like a lens. Wait a minute ... is that the lensing? As in a black hole? It would warp the light around the black hole making it appear that there is a new star. Have you double checked your equipment?
She looked at him and then back to the scope. That thing is huge. Curiouser and curiouser indeed on this one.
I double checked the equipment and there is nothing wrong with it. A black hole, it has to be a rouge. It looks to be about ten or fifteen solar masses of the sun. It could be larger however we need better optics. We need to get to the office.
Dante’ said. I have the coordinates of that and the coordinates of the nose of Big Bear. I noticed that she hadn’t moved at all. This just got very interesting.
Got it – lets go!
They got in the vehicle and drove into town. This is one of the advantage of the line of work they had.
Car – lets get to the office.
Kira said and it drove off. There was a computer system that would allow for the car to drive itself and monitor the passengers. Call the office.
A video screen popped up and a tech answered. James, get the telescopes up and ready for emergency use. We need both of them to figure this set of challenges out. Dr. Legion and I are on our way in. This is important.
What is going on? My team was just getting the systems offline. We were going to be doing some upgrades and standard maintenance this evening. I need more information in order to justify this. What is so important that you need us to put the maintenance on hold for? You and Dr. Legion don’t normally come in...
Do it!
Dante' yelled. We will explain that when we get there. Have the systems up and ready for information to come in as well as the back up drives.
The tech seemed shocked at the fact he got yelled at. Dante' was well known for keeping his temper. This had to be bad if Dante' was yelling.
A few minutes later, they pulled into the telescope facility with the brakes squealing as they stopped. The car had sped up with the conversation and the type of urgency that was in their voices. Kira ran, literally ran past James and pulled the computer system up. She began to type the coordinates in for the two different systems that they needed to look at. Both dishes came to life and began to move to where the points in space that they had been programmed for and started to clear the optics so the air wouldn’t effect the images. She was moving faster than most had ever seen. Dante’ I have both coming up on line. Your on two. James grab a notepad and do manual notes.
While being only a tech, James didn’t like being told what to do and being ordered around. What is going on? Dr. Kira, Dr. Dante’ I don’t understand. You call and are demanding stuff when the system was supposed to be down for routine maintenance.
James started to say. "I was
