About this ebook

Can you ever have too much chocolate? If you asked Chips, he'd say yes. His home, Chocolate City, is bursting with more tasty treats than even the Easter Bunny would know what to do with. But with so many Chocolate people, there aren't enough sugar cubes to feed everyone. Now, citizens are starting to go hungry. To save his home, there's only one thing Chips can do: team up with his friends and travel to The Chocolate Factory – the place where chocolate babies are made – and slow down production.

But if there's one thing Chips has learned, it's that quests never go quite as planned.

To get there, they cross through The Green Forest and battle with hungry snakes, voracious wildcats, and the scariest creature of them all: Peanuts, a friend turned enemy. And as if one brother wasn't enough, Chips somehow picks up three more – a trio of Chocolate babies determined to follow him everywhere he goes.

When Chips and company finally make it to the factory, what they find is worse than they feared. Chips comes face-to-face with his creator: the giant in the sky – who has a much different plan for Chips and his friends than slowing down the chocolate production. Suddenly, a bid to save their world becomes a bid to escape with their lives.

WRITING "The Chocolate People" was a challenge for me because I had never written a book before. Later I decided to write a second novel, The Big Chocolate Factory. The challenge this time was to make the book more interesting and have fun in the process. I already knew The Big Chocolate Factory would be the bridge between The Chocolate People and the final novel, The Chocolate World. Of the three books in this series, The Big Chocolate Factory is my favorite because we see how the story expands, how the characters mature, and how small adventures evolve into a massive one—not only for this series but for future tales as well.

I would like to thank God, for the experience while creating this massive chocolate adventure. I would like to thank my editors, Brenda Rusch, and Kristin Waller, for helping me in the process of copyediting and proofreading. Thanks to my sister Jetty, my wife Desiree, and friend Rimi Cooper for beta reading and testing the books. I want to dedicate this series to my daughter Hailey, and my twin boys Ethan and Liam, and my nieces Rebecca and Sarah, plus my nephew Hezekiah Otoniel.

I would also like to dedicate this adventure to anyone who has ever dreamed of something more, something larger than life. It is a human need to sometimes escape from reality. This is why we dance, swim, listen to music, read and participate in other activities. Just as it is important to feed our bodies, it is also necessary to feed our imagination. The more you feed it, the more it grows.

It is a human thing to wonder; we have the urge, the need, to see what’s beyond our sights.

    The Chocolate People...

A Chocolate boy named Chips, along with his younger brother, Almond, break the laws of Chocolate City to visit Strawberry City, which is considered enemy territory. At the beginning of their journey, they meet three young Strawberry people—Coco, her sister Caramel, and an angry boy named Peanuts.

Together they travel across the Chocolate Ocean to discover what happens at the Carnival, a top-secret location. It’s a mysterious place where Chocolate and Strawberry people have to go, according to law, once they reach adulthood, but many of them never return home. Before Chips and his friends can reach their destination, they must face terrible sea creatures, Chocolate pirates, and even Chocolate mermaids.

Chips and his friends tell the Chocolate people and Strawberry people that the carnival is not a place for fun at all. Instead, it’s a place where the giants who created them feast on them! Chips is able to overcome every obstacle, thanks in part to a powerful bracelet he finds with a very strong laser that can melt anything made of Chocolate.

Chips and Coco fall in love with each other, but it’s a forbidden love because of their different flavors. The laws of their cities make it illegal for them to be together. However, they willingly break the laws that keep them apart, even when Chips faces being melted by fire!

After all of their adventures and dangerous close calls, Chips manages to bring peace to Chocolate City and Strawberry City. But Peanuts, who never wanted peace between the two cities, betrays him. Peanuts will do anything he can to destroy Chocolate City.

When Chips manages to shut down the carnival for good, he believes his city and his future have changed for the better. But he could never imagine what would happen next. He never anticipated the consequences of shutting down the carnival or the vengeance that Peanuts was planning for him!

In the end, the holy Marshmallow Messengers reveal to Chips that he is the chosen one—the only one who can save his city from war and the invasion that is coming very soon, one that would destroy the entire Chocolate World.

Chips would not have imagined that his troubles were only beginning. The time of peace and happiness that he had fought for so bravely was about to expire, and everything that he cares for is about to be destroyed. Chips had an incredible adventure to see The Fountain of Know-it-All and lived to share it, but this time he might not be so lucky...

    Chapter 1

    Silent Memories

My name is Chips, and I live in Chocolate City. Ever since the beginning of time, the Chocolate people have been at war with the Strawberry people. Many of us pray daily for this useless war to come to an end once and for all. So many Chocolates have been lost to these ongoing wars. The Chocolate people and the Strawberry people should be one big, happy family because we’re all Chocolates, even though we have different flavors. We were all created equal by the giants. But our cities have not been able to achieve peace because of our different beliefs.

Now the truth is out—we all know for sure that the giants exist. Our creators are real. The Chocolate people were right about how we were created, but the Strawberry people were right, too. Two concrete statues told us that in order for the giants to create us, they need fruits that grow on plants. Even though we’ve seen the creators, we still haven’t seen them creating life.

All we know is that they tried to eat us when we went to the carnival! Thankfully, I was able to stop the giants from eating most of my people and the Strawberry people. I don’t know if we’ll ever see those giants again, but I really hope we don’t. I’d rather live the rest of my life not knowing where we came from and knowing that I am alive.

The Marshmallow Messengers are celestial beings that come down to visit once in a while. They reveal sacred prophecies to my people and the Strawberry people. They told us a long time ago that a great leader would rise to power and bring peace to both nations. The only problem was that the Marshmallow Messengers didn’t say from which city this leader would come. Recently I was told that I am the chosen one—the great leader who will bring peace. But to be honest, I’m just a normal guy, and I don’t feel like a great leader at all. I feel too young, like I should be out there in the world having fun. Instead, I have to worry about bringing peace to the Chocolate nations.

I never felt like a hero, so I just did things the best way I knew. I was really angry about all the wars, and I decided to force peace on our enemies once and for all. If I couldn’t achieve peace, I was going to destroy their lands. The Strawberry people had no choice but to surrender, and now there was peace across the land.

Finally, after many years of tears and prayers, we were able to rest easy knowing that the war between the Chocolate people and the Strawberry people was over. The Marshmallow Messengers also said there was an enemy stronger than both Chocolate cities combined, and in the near future, this enemy would attack both cities. That is why it was necessary for our cities to make peace and unite—before the new enemy arrived. We didn’t know when the new enemy would attack, but we had to be vigilant at all times.

During my amazing journey, I met the girl of my dreams. Her name is Coco. Even though she’s a Strawberry girl, I thought she was the most beautiful girl in the world from the very first moment I met her. It was love at first sight, even though it was forbidden to interact with each other. But I knew it was meant to be.

After our wild adventures crossing the Chocolate Ocean, Coco and her younger sister, Caramel, came to live with my people in Chocolate City. Other Strawberry people also came to Chocolate City. My life has changed overnight. The girl I love now lives just a few blocks away from my house, and I am able to see her every day. I no longer worry about the future because I know that Coco is my future. Whenever we’re able to spend time together, I feel complete and I don’t need anything else in this Chocolate world. I know she feels the same way about me; whenever I’m with her, she becomes very happy.

I love to see Coco smile because it reminds me of a wonderful dream. These days I feel like I’m living in my very own dream, and the best part is that this dream is real—I never have to wake up. The funny part is that she’s still not my girlfriend. Well...I haven’t asked her yet. I’ve never asked anyone to be my girlfriend before; I don’t even know what to say or when would be the right time to say it. So, I’m still waiting for the right moment to ask her—I hope it will be soon.

Recently Coco has been acting strangely, like something is bothering her and she doesn’t want to talk about it. But I know what is upsetting her; her sister explained it to me. I just pretend that I don’t know about it. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not, but I’d prefer that Coco tell me about her problem herself, whenever she feels ready.

Sometimes I find her crying alone, and it breaks my heart to know what she’s going through. Coco misses her family a lot—they stayed in Strawberry City when she and Caramel moved to Chocolate City. She thinks about her mother and father all the time. I don’t know why they didn’t come to live with us. All I want is to see Coco happy, but I can’t be happy if Coco’s not happy.

What I have trouble understanding is how well Coco’s little sister, Caramel, is adjusting to all of the changes. She doesn’t seem to mind at all that she’s away from her parents. Maybe it’s because she’s so young, and she can cope with having her family living far away.

I’ve also noticed that Caramel and my brother Almond have been spending a lot of time together. They’re practically inseparable these days. I really don’t know what to make of it. Maybe they really like each other. I guess it’s fine if they like each other, but they’re still pretty young to be boyfriend and girlfriend. Maybe they’re just really, really, really good friends. Yeah, that’s probably what’s going on. At least my brother doesn’t bother me when I spent time with Coco. I still miss the good old days when it was just my brother and me—well...not really. With Coco I have more than I could ever ask for.

Once in a blue moon, we
