I was raised not to let others down, to ‘pull myself together’ and have a ‘stiff upper lip’. My dad was a pub landlord, a job in which you are meant to be relentlessly jolly. Despite having had TB and coped with relative poverty, if a customer asked how he was feeling, he would reply ‘mustn’t grumble’. I think now, why the hell not?
