REVIEW...
Throughout the book the Muse of Aroma and Taste weaves all the emotions, flavors, and textures of love, thereby conjuring up a veritable feast of sensual, culinary delights for you to enjoy. Recipes and stories from across the world and centuries are combined; some are simple fairy tales and others heartfelt explorations of love. All are designed to lead you on a journey to love in all its splendor.
This glorious celebration of life, love, and food has the flavor of The Tales of 1001 nights and Scheherazade.
Each story, crafted with beautiful words of emotion, color, and light, brings the meal and the food to life. The recipes that follow allow the reader to become part of the story when they follow the instructions to create the dish. Thereby experiencing the energy of the food, its appearance, smell, and taste as the thread of the storyline weaves its magic and ties all the senses together.
This book was a delight to my senses and filled me with the desire to get into the kitchen and create the dishes that inspired the stories.
Food is the thing that unites us all. In order to live, we must eat. The tales in Tipsy Man cross geographical, cultural, and temporal boundaries, and in doing
so remind us of our humanity and that food connects like no other thing.
I particularly love the author's comments on the origin of the recipes and how they came into her possession. In truth, it is an act of love to share
your best-kept recipe secret with another. The Muses' voice sets the scene for each mealtime chapter and reminds us of the importance of time of day and with whom we "break bread".
A wonderful book to take with you on a voyage or to enjoy curled up in front of a fire with a hot chocolate to sip on and a warm blanket to snuggle into.
Thank you, Melody.

The recipes that follow allow the reader to become part of the story when they follow the instructions to create the dish. Thereby experiencing the energy of the food, its appearance, smell and taste as the thread of the story line weaves its magic and ties all the senses together.

This book was a delight to my senses and filled me with the desire to get into the kitchen and create the dishes that inspired the stories.

Food is the thing that unites us all. In order to live, we must eat. The tales in Tipsy Man cross geographical, cultural and temporal boundaries and in doing so remind us of our humanity and that food connects like no other thing.

The Muses’ voice sets the scene for each mealtime chapter and reminds us of the importance of time of day and with whom we break bread.

My particular favourite is The Voyage – with its story within a story. I could smell and taste the delights of the food, artfully described, and felt as if I were there. The long sea voyage and the raw emotion of being transported across the world to a new and strange land brought back my own memories of the same experience.

A wonderful book to take with you on a voyage or to enjoy curled up in front of a fire with a hot chocolate to sip on and a warm blanket to snuggle into.

    Thank you, Melody.

A Tipsy Man Goes Naked is not my typical read. But it was delightfully refreshing. Not only is it jam-packed with beautiful stories, rich with deeper meanings and life lessons, there’s also a lovely recipe to compliment them! Melody Green tells her short stories with such an eye for detail, each one is enrapturing, yet all wonderfully unique. And I cannot wait to get myself into a kitchen and butcher a Zuppa Inglese!

I truly enjoyed this read. It felt like reading poetry, but with the grip of a good novel. Each character with their own story just as interesting as the last. There isn’t really much else to say other than if you fancy learning a thing or two, and you enjoy a good short story that leaves you fulfilled, I’d absolutely recommend this one. Not to mention the recipes, again. I love food.

4/5 stars for the lovely Melody, looking forward to seeing more from her!

    Dear Reader,

One of the most fortunate things about living in Australia, is the wonderful mixture of culture and ideas that a multi-cultural society allows a writer to access. So much love and friendship, as well as the opportunity to share our differences, our food and our cultural heritage are possible when we share a meal with a neighbour.

I could have written my personal memoirs of those people that have checkered the tapestry of my life. But it would have meant asking their permission to tell their stories, and feeling obliged to get the story as accurate as possible, without offending their sensibilities, and it seemed too great a minefield to risk losing friends over.

When I began this project I had no idea where I would get my recipes from. But as I began to write the characters a strange thing happened; the characters took over the writing of the story and the recipes suddenly presented themselves through my own collection that I had come by through exchanging with friends, pupils and clients over the years.

It was not a matter of what I would include but rather what I would leave out, especially when some recipes were so insistent. "Don’t forget me’’ they seemed to say, as I let yet another possibility for a story with a

    recipe reveal itself to me.

So welcome to my book of stories and recipes. Wherever possible each recipe is acknowledged with the friend who has offered me their recipe, friendship and love or any other source that may have contributed to my collection.

May you make your own wonderfully delicious ‘love recipes’ when you share these with those you love.

    With blessings to you, Melody

    Aroma and Taste -

    The Muse speaks:

ALL AROUND YOU IS A mirror. You are a mirror too. Though you are transparent, you accept the illusion of solid mass as you live in the world. You do this so you may gain a grasp on love. For to find love’s meaning, its substance, and to experience its fullness, is your only goal. You feel for its shape and look for its colour and texture. At the depth of your being you know that to know love is to know all there is, and you seek this knowledge with far greater striving than you would believe possible, if you could but see it from my perspective.

    And who am I?

I am the Muse of Aroma and Taste. Through me you learn to smell and taste love in everything around you. Often I have been misunderstood, misrepresented and sometimes missed altogether, such is the power of your fear. I am the subject of temptation, the food of the mind, the tastes of the soul and the aroma of the spirit. Yet to know me you need to go beyond all that is - to the heart, where all senses dissolve into the power that is love.

Ah! Here I sense your fear. The journey into this paradise is strewn with bittersweet flavours, some long held within your memory, thought never to be released.

But how can you experience the fresh and fragrant unless your palate is cleared of the old?

Purge yourself of the stale, the repeated and putrid for once cleansed with the waters of forgiveness, you may taste anew from the wellspring that is love.

You do not need to gorge yourself, nor be worried about the calories, carbohydrates or fat here. Love is sinless. Love is pure. Love is profound. Surrender now.

Through your senses of taste and smell your will reach once more the sublime state of heavenly paradise that is love expressed.

It was Adam and Eve’s seeking of love that had them expelled from paradise. For to find paradise is to accept that love is everything. Without doubt, without questioning and without desiring proof. And how do you know that love exists, unless you have the experience and the proof of it?

Your senses know this and when you allow them to have their fullest and most divine expression, they act as frequency switches through which to experience love.

You may have been destined to walk through the wilderness, but you were not expected to do so without an inner guiding system. Back to the paradise of love, with me as your guide.

But where do you look for love?

In grand gestures and peak experiences. You make it so hard for yourself. Love is present in the small, the mundane and the ever present. Day in and out showing you all and blindly you turn from these sacred expressions, your eyes heavenward and distant, searching always questing to see what is plainly right in front of you.

But these musings bring you back... back to the sacred alchemy of love expressed mundanely, through food. Opening you through your senses of taste and smell into love’s sanctuary, and here I hope you stay. Not with my stories for they are trifling baubles to please and amuse the eye and to keep your mind from wandering too far from home. No! I hope that you stay close in yourself, in the warmth of love’s embrace, in the paradise of your desire. In love.

    The Essentials

Some ingredients are essential to life.

They are foundational ingredients usually found in most recipes.

They are necessary for each moment of your lives to have depth and richness. They are the magical elements of life that create the blueprint of who you are. If your lives are designed to experience a lot of salt and sorrows, you will crave sweet honey to soothe the palate. If your lives have too much spice, too much change, too much anger and fire, you will crave the soothing energy of water. If you are too green, very healthy and well maintained, you will crave the heat of spice to give you the peak experiences of life, to spark you into new understanding. And if your life is filled with too much sweetness, you will crave sorrows to help temper your good fortune.

Each one of you comes with a leaning to one more than another, and some of you may never move out of the archetypal tension of your opposite; salt-sugar, spice-water, herbs-spice or honey-salt. A fully rounded life will have a mix of all five essentials. There will be health, succulence, lusciousness, depth and spark. These people will shine with life and look beautiful even if their image is without the most symmetry, because their very being is brimming with all that is good and wondrous in life.

If there is one aim to have in your life it is this: aim for a life well lived, experiences treasured as memories and no part of your life rejected, but accepted as part of the whole recipe of your life. Then my beloved, you will have lived.

If we together, you and I, have found this great alchemy, each helping the other, I will share your life and you will be the rich thread of my memory.

    Remember...

Water gives and maintains life. Herbs support good health.

Spices flavour our experiences of life. Salt expresses our sorrows and...

Honey sweetens life and makes it worth living.

    Breakfast

Time for Breakfast - The Muse speaks

The first meal of the day.

Is a chance to re-connect, to start again, to begin anew. It’s hard to remember that beginning anew begins with each moment or that change within is possible all the time. So daily you have a reminder, a fresh sunrise, a first meal, a chance to connect with the living energy of food, often prepared by hands unseen in the darkness. A reminder that birth comes from within the darkness and explodes into sunlight through the labour of love.

A reminder that no matter how bleak your existence, your particular pathway appears to be, it can be salvaged by the everyday action of faith. That by remembering that today is a new day, it is possible to be nourished anew with love. To change what appears unchangeable.

Allow yourself a moment’s contemplation. The opportunity to have your day, exactly as you would like it. Slow your day down at meal times; stop hurrying, running, missing your moment of fresh contemplation on the new world. Turn off the clock, the rushing, the pushing forward, and the set of your railway tracks through life. Shut off the internet, computer, television, mobile phone and for one moment, breathe in the flavours of breakfast.

Smell the new day that has arisen for you to enjoy. Hear the birds, play with your animals and your children in a light-hearted manner. Come together in joy and hope, and see how much love springs forth. How much better does your breakfast taste?

Then after breakfast, your day can rush a little. You can gear up into the day, your body and mind more fully aligned, for you are in step with your day and the power of love that flows through you.

    The Food Taster

Along time ago, on the banks of an ancient river, there lived a wealthy merchant. Everything that life had to offer was his. He dined on the best foods, wore the finest silks and brocades, and his fingers were dressed in golden jewels. His home was as sumptuous as any king’s, with beautiful gardens and where every whim he dared to dream was his.

Of all his treasures, the ones he valued most were the rare birds that were contained in his aviary, and he spent many hours watching them fly high within their caged walls, only to return to the limbs of branches and sit and look out at him. They were in all sizes, shapes, colours and plumages, and the merchant loved them dearly.

On the opposite side of the river a poor shoemaker lived. His hut was barely big enough for him and his business. All around him were the signs of his labours. Skins and leathers, lathes and buckles, hammers and dyes. Although the shoemaker was kept busy with his trade most of his customers were like him - poor, struggling, and hardworking. He was an excellent craftsman, this poor shoemaker, and he could have charged many more coins for his work than he did; but he had decided long ago that it was better to keep the folk of the town in his shoes, than have them go barefoot because they couldn’t afford him. And so his income was meagre but he was content, knowing his shoes walked the adventures of this east bank of the river town.

The shoemaker lived a circumspect life of prayers and work but he had two weaknesses: one was learning and reading, which for his circumstance and age made him an unusual man. The other weakness was food. Not that he gorged himself, for his income would not allow this, but that he savoured the flavours, texture and smells of all that he consumed. Many a widow had paid for her young son’s growing feet with a specialty of her house, be it a bread or cake, sweet or savoury, a breakfast or supper dish. His favourite dish of all time was a small sweetmeat or cake made from nuts and spices and the sweet flavourings of rosewater and honey. These small sweetmeats were made only for special occasions on the east bank because the ingredients were so expensive. So the shoemaker ate them rarely. Like all good recipes there was a legend as to how these sweetmeats came into being; and the shoemaker loved telling the tale to all the young children that hung about at the front of
