A Madame In Africa - Latoya Brown
Chapter 1
There was nothing like hearing the register ding and hearing the rustle of bags. Ka-ching! Denise loved that sound. The cashier knew which shopping bag would fit Denise's purchases perfectly. Denise was pleased with the medium sized bag with it’s brown writing and silky brown ropes to be used to hold the high quality paper bag. The name brand designer computer bag she bought was snuggly placed in a cardboard box and now in this bag. The new computer bag would be put to use and each time it was time to whip it out, Denise knew she would feel a certain pride along with bringing it. Yes, it was a designer computer bag, but the part that made Denise smile wider was that she was actually getting the bag for free.
Thank you,
chirped the high pitched cashier as she handed Denise her receipt and the bag's velvety ropes in her other hand.
Denise looked at the cashier's name tag and replied, Thank you, April.
She gave her a warm smile.
Denise knew that using the cashier’s actual name would bring about that smile and hoped that it gave April a little perk in her day. Denise certainly had hers. The new bag was tucked in the big shopping bag along with her other purchases of a nice leather wallet that somewhat matched the computer bag in color and a sleek, slim gold watch. The reds were not too loud, but a soft wine. The leather felt silky in her hand and she just loved how it looked worn and a bit rugged. The luxury was the feel of the leather and the care of the workmanship. Denise loved to look like she wasn’t giving much effort nor thought towards what she was wearing, but in actuality she took time and care to present herself.
Normally Denise was careful with her pennies, being certain to pay herself first and tuck some money away with each check or payment that made its way to her. Being a secret shopper only helped her to stay balanced with getting something for something; doing a superb job on her observations.
Denise enjoyed the life of a secret shopper. She remembered the days when she was taking any assignment just to get her name in the hat and to have more assignments come her way. Nowadays she was sought after and her name popped up with some of the best top companies who wanted shoppers with a discerning eye and taste. It only took thirteen months to start really making a name for herself. The emails and rapport started to turn to referrals for other jobs. Before she knew it, Client Services departments were personally reaching out to her via email. Denise's secret shopping reports were thorough and her ability to capture the perfect picture that encapsulated her shopping experience always left her with raving reviews and bonuses. The bonuses were really good with the higher end stores. So, she really felt the pay should equal the character she played for that moment. In those thirteen months of being diligent it felt easy to give in or even to become complacent with only doing $15 shopping assignments. Denise had had her fair share of the cheaper shopping assignments. In her past secret shopping days she even went on $5 shopping assignments. Anything to get in the door and onward to something better. There had to be something better than just signing on to eating at restaurants with greasy foods. Denise was glad she stayed the course.
When Golden Bags, a company she'd been working with for 5 months, posted about shopping at a designer store, Denise clicked at the chance quickly. It was actually perfect for her. The designer brand was one of her favorites and she had always wanted one of the purses or bags on their website. Once Gold Bags vetted her profile she was provided with instructions on how to perform this shopping experience. It was actually a pretty involved process. Denise took it seriously and it showed. She not only researched about the company and possible items she would buy, but she also would make certain to make her shopping experience a true and full experience. It became a ritual for her to get to the mall or shopping store after having enjoyed a nice lunch or brunch. Denise embodied the true woman of luxury and allowed herself to become engrossed in focusing on treating herself. To her, this was the only way she could be objective with a critical eye. It worked! After four years of being in the mystery shopper business she was now with three top companies known for their luxury shopper experiences.
It was not every week that she was shopping, but she was definitely working on it. Now that she'd bought her designer computer bag she still had a seven page report to fill out full of details. The details ranged from how she was greeted when she walked through the business's doors to what their restrooms looked like. Still, there were more points in between to be attentive to, such as if the floors were presentable and polished. Was the cashier’s appearance friendly and nice? Was I offered a beverage? The secret shopping experience was particular and they wanted their shoppers to enjoy their time while spending their money. It was the perfect reflection of focusing on the 20% who will make up 80% of your business. Since reading that principal, Denise never forgot it.
This particular store was known for their elaborate flower arrangement. When you walked into the main walking area of this store it welcomed you with a giant, but not too overwhelming display of fresh flowers. The flowers ranged in types, but you could always rely on a beautiful display of nature at this store. It was even cause to visit the store everyday with how meticulously they chose the color scheme to compliment the latest bags or clothing in the store.
Denise was a tad disappointed due to the flowers not looking as fresh as what she expected. The report stated to not ask about the flowers, but to only note them. Each day they were to be fresh and these simply were not. The Bird of Paradise flowers just seemed to be drooping and not perky as fresh flowers should. Denise noted that mentally for when she would have
