I dedicate this book to my father, Jack Helm.
Dad wrote his reflections daily in a journal throughout
his adult life and encouraged me to do the same.
In writing this book of reflections I was
inspired by his encouragement.
It is one of the many pieces of advice he gave me
over the years which have made me a better person.

To my wife, Anne, who is the love of my life and who encouraged me to write these reflections in a journal;
To my parents, Jane and Jack Helm, who were the source of so many examples and so much love, despite ours being a normal family with imperfections;
To my sisters and brothers, Jane, John, Ted, Lucy and David, who I love and have learned from while growing up and continuing in adulthood;
To my Grandmother, Mayme Schulten, who has been the most loving example in my life;
To my children, Kim, Amy, Douglas, Meghan and Todd, for my many loving experiences with them and for the joy and privilege of being their father;
To my stepchildren, Erin, Adam, and especially Taylor, who came into my life unexpectedly and gives me joy;
