    What is Obesity?

Obesity is a disease that gives rise to other diseases. It is defined as carrying too much body weight or body fat on one’s person. Whether or not a person is obese is determined by the person’s BMI. BMI stands for body mass index. It is an assessment that states whether or not a person carries the appropriate amount of body fat for their sex, age and height. BMI is determined by a licensed medical professional and it also takes into account variations in body shape.

BMI ranges from the numbers 1 to 39.9. A person with a BMI between 30 and 39.9 is obese. If the BMI is between 25 and 29.9, the individual is overweight. Being overweight is the condition whereby a person carries too much body weight or body fat to have optimal health but still maintains a BMI that is below 30.

Having a BMI below 18.5 places a person in a precarious health position because this person is underweight. Being underweight also carries negative health consequences.

Having a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is ideal. This is the healthy weight range.

Using BMI as a measure for obesity is a great tool but it has its limitations. For example, it does not factor in the muscle density of an individual. Muscles are denser than fat so a person with a high muscle mass, like bodybuilders, may be classified as obese even though their higher weight is attributed to their muscle mass. BMI is also not a good indicator of body fat for pregnant women. If you have any questions concerning your weight, you should consult your doctor.

The Negative Health Implications of Obesity

Obesity is not a disease that occurs in isolation. It comes with a host of other complications. It increases an individual’s risk of developing several other diseases, such as:

    Type 2 diabetes.

Cardiovascular diseases like stroke and heart disease.

Certain cancers like breast, colon, liver, kidney, prostate and rectum cancer.

Sexual health problems like erectile dysfunction in men and irregular periods in women.

Sleep diseases such as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition that stops an individual from breathing intermittently for a few seconds. This can lead to death.

    Osteoarthritis.

Digestive health problems like impaired liver function, gallbladder disease and heartburn.

The detrimental effects of obesity are not just physical. It also has negative implications on mental and emotional health. Obesity is linked to the development of mental and emotional health issues like anxiety and depression. This affects the sufferer’s quality of life. Many people isolate themselves due to the effects of obesity on their physical, mental and emotional health because it becomes more difficult to participate in everyday
