Back to youth - William Charles
Introduction
––––––––
The fountain of youth, the tree of eternal life, the elixir of immortality... since the dawn of time, humankind has been on a tireless quest to find the secret to living forever. Today, we know better - and so, we seek the second-best option, to hold back the aging process as long as we possibly can.
We are programmed with an innate desire not only to prolong our lives but more importantly, to stay young-looking, fit and vigorous until the very end. This is not typically due to a morbid fear of death as some experts suggest but rather, a strong love of life. In fact, a wide-ranging survey of diverse people between the ages of 18 to 64 reached the following findings:
● Only 1 out of 6 people would not want to live to the age of 80.
● The participants who preferred to die before the age of 80 held negative views about the aging process and its consequences.
● The majority of participants who preferred to live longer had more optimistic beliefs about what aging would be like for them.
Life, despite its many hardships and struggles, is a wonderful experience that we want to continue enjoying as long as possible. We want to keep doing the things that we love and pursuing our passions. We want to be around to watch as many breathtaking sunsets as we can. We want to play with our grandchildren and proudly watch them blossom into amazing young men and women...

What is the real goal?
When we think about longevity, it's crucial to get our priorities straight. Living longer should not be an end in itself. Think about it. What's the point in living longer if you struggling with myriad health issues, pain and discomfort? Living longer would just prolong the suffering, wouldn't it?
The outspoken American jurist Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. sums it up brilliantly when he says, "Longevity is having a chronic disease and taking care of it".
The goal is not only to delay aging but to ensure that you enjoy optimum health and wellbeing in the process. We've all heard the expression aging gracefully

CHAPTER 1: Facts, Fads and Myths Around Anti-Aging
––––––––
Finding the secret to the fountain of youth and even immortality has been and will continue to be the innermost desire of humankind. This chapter discusses how these concepts developed through the ages and how they are viewed today.
Ancient myths and legends
1. The fountain of youth
Although the origins of the concept are unknown, the fountain of youth has captured the imagination of explorers, historians, emperors, artists and collective cultures throughout history. It was believed that the magical river/spring/pool/lake that exited in some faraway land would rejuvenate the youth of anyone who bathed in or drank from it.

Tales of the mystical fountain have circulated for centuries. They are even mentioned in the writings of 5th century B.C. historian Herodotus. The early Caribbean cultures describe a mystical land caked Bamini, where the fountain of youth could be found.
Some early Eastern writings describe how Alexander the Great crossed the Land of Darkness to find the magical Waters of Life
.

2. The elixir of life
The concept of a potion that would give humans immortality originated in the ancient Eastern cultures of China and India, making its way to Europe through the millennia. Alchemists became obsesses with formulating such an elixir, believing

that it was totally possible to create a potion that would grant eternal life. Others believed that the elixir or its ingredients existed in some secret location.
In ancient Indian tradition, Amrita is the name for the elixir of life. Long, intricate legends were woven around the concept, the gist of them being that Amrita exists somewhere in the depths of the oceans and cannot be made by human hands.
Ancient Chinese traditions held a similar belief. During the Qin dynasty (around 230 B.C.), emperor Qin Shi Huang sent his chief alchemist along with 1000 young men and women on a quest for the elixir at the Eastern Sea. The expedition never returned.
Alchemists throughout history als0 experimented with various substances and precious elements such as Cinnabar. Hematite and gold. Many of these substances were in fact quite toxic and some potions actually contained mercury.
Ancient European legends claim that alchemists like Nicolas Flamel and St. Germain were able to create the elixir of life, also called the Philosopher's Stone. If so, they obviously did not test the potion on themselves as they are no longer around.
Fun fact: The elixir of life reportedly has over 1000 different names, spanning as it does so many cultures and ages.
3. Longevity tradition
The ancient Chinese practiced what is known as
