Chasing the light - Thembi Ntahane KaMahlangu

    DEPRESSION

    Sonnet 1

The voices in my head are loud

Covering my thoughts like a cloud.

I can't listen to the voice

Deep within helping me to make my own choice.

    I don't recognise the voices I hear

    Whispering in my ear

    Burying mine deep within.

In the loud crowd of confusion

It whispers in the background conclusion.

The soul wants what it wants

Or else it creates a black hole

    That swallows me whole.

All emotions thrown into the abyss

    Just a hole Echoing despair.

    Sonnet 3

    There is no sound

Louder than silence with no one around.

    Talks turning into screams

It sure feels like a dream.

An elision to elude the mind

An organ that is just blind.

    Though the colonisers are real

    I wish you could feel

    Just how loud they get

When no one is around yet

    Silence echoes in my ear

    The colonisers rejoice I hear

    In silence, solitude they find

    Even I seized to mind.

    Sonnet 4

The hole in me just cried for its missing piece

Just when I thought my heart was finally at peace.

The pain just pealed over the blood clot of my scar

Blood pouring from a hollow pit afar

I felt emptiness beating my ribcage harder

    My soul echoing pain, scarred.

This valley is crying for the love unknown

    Calling for affection never shown.

The words mama just fall on the tip of my tongue

For the first time it means something

I never held on to it even when I was young

To me it never meant anything

Yet here I am wondering how it feels

To spit just this simple word: mama.

I kissed the angel of death

I looked into his calm eyes

He looked into my troubled soul

Seduced me with his crystal-clear eyeballs

I longed to see through them

I desired to make them my own

    Like calm ocean waves

    They breathed a soft breeze

    Into my humbled souls

    Calmed the storm

    That was brewing inside

    Not aware,

    I was hooked

I reached for the pile of pill next to me

    Like a slide show

    I was now looking at

    A beautiful sunset

    Scattering leftover sunrays

I felt my body drift to oblivion

    My troubled soul

    Teleport into an alternate universe

    I had committed the felony

    Of kissing the angel of
