    The End

    Prologue

The Carrington family of four sat around their dinner table. Mary Carrington had just served dessert.

Candi and Sally exchanged glances and nodded. Sally said, Mom and Dad, Candi and I have decided where we’ll apply to attend college next year. We have to send our applications in now.

Yes? Mary said. Which schools do you like?

We’ve both decided to go to Columbia College in Chicago. It has a good reputation in Interior Design and is in the price range you set.

Both to the same college? No. I told you to choose different schools.

But Dad! Sally and Candi chorused. Identical stubborn expressions showed on the blonde twins’ faces.

John Carrington’s face took on its usual lawyerly expression that clearly said, ‘I’m the boss here.’ He drank his coffee.

Sally continued, You’ve been separating us at school since second grade. We’ll be over eighteen when we leave for college. It’s way past time for us to have some say in where we go. There’s a great program in Interior Design at this Columbia College in Chicago.

Candi put in, They have a great art program for me, too. For once, let us be together.

No, John insisted. It’s way past time for you two to stop playing your identical games. I’m tired of you two always wearing the same clothes so I have to figure out which one I’m talking to. I’m in charge of the money, and you’ll go to different colleges if you want me to pay the bills.

Mo-om? Identical blue eyes turned to Mary.

Mary flushed and sighed. I’m sorry, but your father and I have talked to several different counselors about this and they all recommend that you need to be separated at school. You can’t spend the rest of your lives as a two-some. It’s time to learn to each go your own way.

But, Mom, we’re not really alike. I mean, sure we look alike, but we have different goals. Candi wants to study art while I’ll be taking Interior Design classes like you did. So even if we go to the same college, we’ll be taking different classes most of the day. We just want to be close to support each other.

I’m sorry, girls, but your father and I have decided this. You must choose separate colleges. You need to learn to find other friends and not depend so much on each other.

Candi put in, How about different colleges in the same city? Then we could at least share an apartment like we do now.

No. Case is closed, John said in his best lawyer tones. If you don’t do what we want, I don’t pay the bills. You’ll have to work your way through college or take out lots of student loans. Take it or leave it.

Sally jumped to her feet. We always have to do what you want. You’re just mad because we don’t want to go to law school to be a lawyer like you. When do we get to do what we want?

When you graduate from college and pay your own bills.

Oooh! Sally jumped up and ran upstairs. Candi looked appealingly at her parents, but their set faces said they weren’t changing their minds. She sighed and followed her sister to her bedroom where they cried out their frustration and began to figure out their next college applications.

    Chapter 1

    August

Candi Carrington stood at her easel, working on the landscape she’d started right after her high school graduation party. It was coming along nicely and she had only a week to finish it before she left for college. She hadn’t wanted to leave it to attend another of her father’s parties for his law office employees. So, she’d gotten her twin sister, Sally, to attend in her place. It was her turn to attend, but she hated going to her Dad’s stuffy office things.

Had either of her parents guessed? If so, what would be her punishment?

She heard the front door close. Her twin conspirator was home. Quickly she cleaned and put away her paint brushes and washed her hands in her en-suite bathroom.

In a minute, Sally appeared at her bedroom door, wearing a happy grin. She carried two cold cans of soda she’d evidently picked up from the refrigerator on her way upstairs and handed one to Candi.

Sally pulled off her high heels and dropped onto the sofa on the other side of Candi’s large bedroom. Our switcheroo worked, as usual! Lifting the soda, she guzzled a long swallow.

Candi gave her a hug, then giggled, kicked off her tennis shoes and propped herself against the pillows on her bed. She took a long drink. Told you it would! Thanks, I needed this soda. I’ve been working for hours without a break.

They smiled into each other’s clear blue eyes, shiny, long blonde hair hanging below their shoulders. Chatting about their day was their favorite bedtime tradition. Tonight, Sally was in Candi’s room, just as often, they met in Sally’s bedroom.

This is so much fun! Candi said. They didn’t guess it was you at their lame party instead of me, did they?

Sally grinned. Nope. I told you they wouldn’t. Not even Mom, and she knows we sometimes pull this switcheroo trick. I was careful not to get too close to her or talk to her though, because talking to her usually gives me away. Thank goodness she and Dad had to go early to set up stuff for the party. I’d never have gotten away with it if I’d had to ride with them. Besides, by taking an Uber, I could leave when I wanted to. They’ll be there for another hour or two, until everyone leaves and they close up the party room.

True. Thanks so much for going for me.

Sally shrugged. I don’t see why you think their parties are so awful. I love taking an Uber downtown and feeling so independent. The party was in Dad’s company party room as usual and the staff were all dressed to kill, as they say.

Huh. I’d have been the one killed—by boredom. And there’s always one or two of the men who drink too much and think they want to make time with the boss’ daughter. Ugh.

Sally giggled and sent her sister a sly smile. That happens to me, too, but I just threaten to tell Dad they got fresh and they back off quick. You should try it.

Candi made a face and guzzled more soda. Still...

Mom always hires the best catering company, so the food is yummy. They had lots of shrimp and salmon hors d’oeuvres and fancy fruits.

Candi made a face. You’re always into that stuff just like Mom. No wonder you want to follow in her footsteps. I couldn’t care less if the tablecloths and napkins match the dishes or the flowers are arranged correctly or not.

Sally’s eyes twinkled. Well, I enjoy these things. Now that I’m eighteen, I can try the fancy drinks, too.

Hah. You used to sneak one whenever they weren’t watching. Be careful of those...drinking can be dangerous.

Don’t worry, I’m careful and I wasn’t driving. I just like to taste the cocktails, to see what all the fuss is about. And I can hear all the latest gossip at Dad’s office, and see who’s flirting with whose wife. It’s amazing what some people think they can get away with. You’d never guess what one of the partner’s wives told me tonight.

    What?

Did you know that Daddy’s secretary is banging one of his partners?

Candi pulled a face. Ugh. No, I didn’t know that. Why would I want to?

Sally grinned. Because it’s interesting, that’s why.

Candi’s eyebrows raised. "Interesting? It’s disgusting. Besides, isn’t
