    CHAPTER 1

    TROPICAL FOREST SCIENTIST

You peer out the window as your plane banks over the Pacific Ocean. The water below is vast and blue. It sparkles in the afternoon sun. As the plane turns toward the Panama Airport, your stomach does flip-flops. Today is an exciting day. You’ve been preparing a long time for this.

You’ve been studying tropical forests and how to save them for your whole career. Now you are traveling to a research center in Panama. There, you will meet with researchers and world-renowned scientists who are doing important work with tropical forests and marine ecosystems. You’ll also get your first big assignment.

The Punta Culebra Nature Center is part of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama City, Panama. The institute studies animals and plants living in tropical regions and the impacts of human activity on them.

You see the forest canopy below you now. Then it clears, the runway appears, and the plane touches down with a lurch. At last, you have arrived.

A Panamanian researcher meets you at the gate. He has shaggy hair, friendly eyes, and a big smile.

Bienvenidos a Panama! he says, using the Spanish word for welcome. He gives you a friendly handshake and introduces himself as Eduardo. But you can call me Eddie, he says.

Eddie takes your bags and places them into his old station wagon. Then you are off to the research center. You roll down your window and let the hot, humid air wash over you. When you arrive at the center, Eddie takes you to a dorm room where you’ll stay the night.
